Since 1982, Exeter, Nebraska-based Horizontal Boring & Tunneling Co. has been providing industry-leading trenchless service to our customers across the United States. Our workforce numbers more than 80 strong, giving us the ability to meet your scheduling needs and provide the service you deserve. Our crews have drilled under rivers, railroads, highways and interstates using directional drilling,

tunneling, auger boring and pilot tube methods -among others - for a variety of services such as water, sewer, electrical and drainage. In addition to our crews, we have employees working in our Maintenance, Inventory, Welding, Pipeyard, Project Management, Logistics, Estimating, Human Resource, Safety, IT and Accounting departments. The majority of our employees have been with us for more than 10 years.

Trenchless Day at HB&T was more than just a field trip—it was a full dive into the world of underground construction! We welcomed 12 students from 3 local schools to our site for an opportunity at a hands-on experience.

Students from Exeter-Milligan-Friend, Dorchester, and Sandy Creek got the opportunity to weld, operate heavy equipment, learn about surveying, run an auger bore machine, and drive a semitruck with a trailer bed. The students rotated through stations, asked great questions, and got a taste of what it’s like to work in trenchless construction.

Why It Matters - Trenchless Day wasn’t just about showcasing the equipment behind the work; it was about building bridges between education and industry. These students saw firsthand how construction careers can be exciting, rewarding, and essential to our communities.

FLASHBACK TO 2019 - Horizontal Boring & Tunneling Co. was selected to install a new waterline after the Spencer Dam in northern Nebraska collapsed in March 2019. Massive flooding caused a ruptured water main that left residents in Boyd County without water.

Even though the original 12-inch-diameter main ran about 10 feet under the riverbed, the dam’s failure — triggered by immense pressure from the rain- and ice-floe-choked Niobrara River — still wiped it out.

The installation posed a daunting challenge: drilling a 4,320-foot bore, almost three-fourths of a mile long. Another complicating factor was the depth of the bore, which at its deepest point would run 80 feet below the riverbed. The five-month-long project started during the first week of April and concluded in late August.

Gratitude for a Great Project Neighbor -
In Lincoln, NE, our crew met a great neighbor. We were basically working in her backyard. HB&T used her water spigot during tunneling, and she brought the crew cookies! We appreciated her kindness & hospitality and gave her a supermarket gift card (in case she feels the need to make more cookies!) and assorted HB&T swag.🙂👷🙂
