Laborers' Local 942 LIUNA’s half-million members build America and build Canada.

LIUNA—the Laborers’ International Union of North America—is the most progressive and aggressive union of construction workers and one of the most diverse and effective unions representing public service employees. They are on the forefront of the construction industry, a powerhouse of 12 million workers, producing 5 percent of our countries’ economic output. Members are united through collective b

argaining agreements, which help create jobs with family-supporting pay, good benefits, the opportunity for advancement and better lives.

LIUNA Northwest Region thanks for the shoutout and recognition that the realities of working in harsh conditions and near-total darkness for the winter months takes its toll on everyone, our members more so than most as they work out in the elements on pipelines, in production yards, and all across the state.

Alaska winters bring weeks of near total darkness, and for construction workers, isolation and long hours can take a mental toll. That's why LIUNA Local 942 provides confidential mental health support, peer networks, and stress resources to help our sisters and brothers navigate the dark season.

Feature Friday!

Alaska Laborers’ Training Fund, an affiliate of The Northwest Region, is one of the few Union training programs where Apprentices can learn to work in extreme arctic conditions.

Because many projects are in isolated areas of Alaska, our Alaska Brothers and Sisters are trained not just to build but to handle harsh weather, remote environments, and unique ground conditions (permafrost) that most construction workers in the US never experience.

As we shake off a record cold 🥶 winter, things are heating up 🥵 at the Local!

An event conceived of, coordinated, and instructed by our very own Laborers Women's Caucus Local 942 occurred this past weekend, where a total of 29 women not associated with the trades were given the opportunity to experience our work and learn first-hand from many of our women leaders in Local 942.

“Women Leading the Build” was spearheaded and started last year by our very own Emaly MacLean, apprentice coordinator for AKLTS and former chair of the Laborers Women’s Caucus. Done in concert with Fairbanks Pipeline Training Center, this work highlights all the opportunities available for women as a construction craft laborer!

We look forward to seeing these ladies around the Hall and on our job sites in the very near future!

In reflecting on the horrific accident in Baltimore yesterday, we often seek to find commonality with those that have perished. In this instance, we need not look further than our Brothers and Sisters. Those six souls on the pothole crew still working as the tragedy unfolded could have easily been at City of Fairbanks Public Works, or any one of our civil contractors. Our prayers go out to their families, and our undying respect goes out to those lost. Union or not, these men and women were lost doing what moves this country forward, laboring to keep America moving.

In the somer words of Sister Stacey Pare-Malcolm: "My heart is heavy today with the tragedy of the Baltimore Bridge collapse. I don’t know if the victims are LiUNA Brothers and Sisters or from a different trade Union but either way I feel connected. They were road construction workers like me. This may have been an out of the ordinary circumstance but it is just another example of how we can be injured. We do dangerous work that is important to the infrastructure of our world. Our ultimate goal is to be safe, get the job done and go home to our families. I am sure that many of my Brothers and Sisters are feeling this as well. I pray for workers and their families."

In a way they are and will always be us. We are one, agree or don't, we are connected in ways that sometimes only show themselves or can be felt with the greatest of tragedy.

Work safe Brothers and Sisters.
