✂️ Raise Your Mower Deck for Summer

One of the easiest ways to help your lawn handle June heat is to mow a little higher.

A taller lawn:

🌱 Develops deeper roots
💧 Holds moisture longer
☀️ Experiences less heat stress
🌿 Naturally helps suppress w**ds

For most Kentucky bluegrass lawns, a mowing height of 3–4 inches is ideal during the summer months.

And remember: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. Cutting too much at once can put unnecessary stress on the lawn.

Healthy lawns aren't just about fertilizer & w**d control, they're also about proper mowing practices.

🙋 Have you raised your mower deck for summer yet?

💧 Watering Every Day May Be Hurting Your Lawn

One of the most common lawn care misconceptions we encounter is that lawns should be watered a little bit every day during hot weather.

While it may seem like more water equals a healthier lawn, the opposite is often true (NOTE: this is for ESTABLISHED lawns).

Daily, shallow watering encourages grass roots to stay near the soil surface where moisture is readily available. As a result, the lawn develops a shallow root system that is less resilient during periods of heat, drought, and stress.

🌱 Healthy lawns are built from the roots up.

Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil in search of moisture, resulting in:

✅ Improved drought tolerance
✅ Better resistance to heat stress
✅ Stronger overall turf health
✅ More efficient use of water
✅ Greater recovery from summer stress

The goal is to provide approximately 1–1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall, applied over fewer, deeper watering events rather than daily light applications.

Another benefit? Proper watering practices also help improve the effectiveness of fertilization programs and support a denser lawn that is better able to compete with w**ds.

At Simply Green, we don't just treat lawns, we help you understand the science behind what creates healthy, resilient turf.

🌿 A greener lawn starts below the surface.

🌱 Monday Lawn Tip

The condition of your lawn today is often the result of what happened weeks ago.

Grass responds gradually to watering, fertilization, mowing, and weather conditions. That's why consistency is so important throughout the growing season.

Small habits can make a big difference:

💧 Water deeply and infrequently
✂️ Mow at the proper height
🍃 Keep mower blades sharp
🌿 Stay ahead of w**ds before they spread

Healthy lawns aren't built in a day, they're built through consistent care over time.

Many people assume w**d control products "kill seeds." In reality, most pre-emergent herbicides work by creating a protective barrier in the upper layer of the soil to prevent w**ds.

As w**d seeds germinate and begin developing roots and shoots, they encounter this barrier and are unable to establish successfully. Pre-emergent is only effective against ANNUAL w**ds, such as crabgrass. They are not effective against perennial w**ds like dandelion.

🌱 Timing is critical because once w**ds emerge above the soil surface, pre-emergent products are no longer effective.

This is one reasonour lawn care programs focus heavily on application timing. Applying the right product at the right time often matters more than the product itself.

Healthy turf, proper mowing, adequate moisture, and well-timed applications all work together to create a lawn that naturally resists w**d pressure.

At Simply Green, our programs are built around the science of turfgrass management, not guesswork.

🌱 Friday Lawn Fact

Did you know that grass plants are constantly replacing themselves?

A mature Kentucky bluegrass lawn contains millions of individual grass plants, each growing, producing new shoots, and developing roots throughout the season.

That's why good lawn care isn't about creating a healthy lawn overnight, it's about consistently providing the conditions that allow those plants to thrive.

💧 Proper watering
🌿 Balanced fertilization
✂️ Correct mowing practices
☀️ Healthy growing conditions

Small actions throughout the season add up to big results.

As you head into the weekend, take a few minutes to enjoy your lawn. It's doing more work than you might realize!

🌿 Nature Hates Bare Soil

Ever wonder why w**ds seem to appear out of nowhere?

Most w**ds aren't invading healthy, dense turf. They're taking advantage of open space where grass is thin or struggling.

A thick lawn helps:

✅ Shade the soil
✅ Reduce w**d seed germination
✅ Compete for water and nutrients
✅ Create a healthier overall landscape

That's why proper mowing, watering, fertilization, and w**d control all work together. When grass is healthy and dense, w**ds have fewer opportunities to establish themselves.

The best w**d prevention is often a healthy lawn.

✋ Can Your Lawn Tell You When It's Thirsty?

Many lawns don't immediately turn brown when they're stressed. In fact, they often provide warning signs before drought damage occurs.

Watch for:

👣 Footprints that remain visible after walking across the lawn
🌱 Grass blades that fold or wilt
🔵 A bluish-gray tint developing in the turf
☀️ Areas that appear dry even after cooler temperatures

These are signs that your lawn is beginning to experience moisture stress.

The good news? Catching these symptoms early and watering properly can help prevent long-term damage and keep your lawn healthy throughout the summer.

A healthy lawn doesn't just survive summer, it thrives through it!

🌱 Mowing Height Matters More Than You Think

One of the most common mistakes we see during the summer months is mowing the lawn too short.

Many homeowners assume cutting the grass shorter means mowing less often. In reality, mowing too low can create additional stress on the lawn, especially during periods of heat and low rainfall.

Benefits of maintaining a taller mowing height:

✅ Deeper, stronger root systems
✅ Improved drought tolerance
✅ Better moisture retention in the soil
✅ Reduced w**d pressure
✅ Healthier, greener turf throughout the summer

As a general rule, never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. For most Kentucky bluegrass lawns, a mowing height of 3–4 inches helps the lawn perform its best during the summer season.

✂️ Cutting it short may provide a freshly manicured look for a few days, but maintaining proper mowing height helps build a healthier lawn for the long term.

☀️ Is Your Lawn Starting to Look a Little Tired?

With the recent stretch of warm temperatures and low humidity, lawns are losing moisture quickly. When humidity levels are low, there's very little moisture in the air to help slow evaporation, which means your lawn can dry out faster than many homeowners realize.

💧 Proper watering is one of the best things you can do for your lawn right now:

✅ Water deeply and infrequently
✅ Apply 1–1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall
✅ Water early in the morning whenever possible
✅ Avoid frequent light watering, which encourages shallow roots

A properly watered lawn is more than just greener. It is also:

🌱 Better able to withstand drought stress
🪲 Less attractive to many insect pests
🍄 Less susceptible to disease pressure
🌿 More responsive to w**d control applications
👣 Better equipped to recover from summer traffic and activity

If your lawn is showing signs of stress, such as a bluish-gray color, lingering footprints, or wilted blades, it may be time to give it a good deep watering.

A little water management now can make a big difference in how your lawn performs through the rest of the summer.
