Hello Everyone. As we step into 2026, I thought I would reflect on my lessons from 2025. This year, I learned a lot about preparing for mistakes before they happen. For example, drilling pilot holes so that wood doesn’t split. I also learned the importance of slowing down and measuring twice, because accuracy up front saves time and material later. Most of all, I learned that respecting the wood, its grain, and limits leads to better results than trying to force a project to work.

I would like to share with you some of my favorite projects from this year.

This was my first time making a tray with a hand router and I couldn’t be happier with the end product. While it is intended for a bedside catch-all, it is also food safe.

The board is made of White Oak and Eastern Red Cedar, both native to eastern North America. White Oak is a hardwood with pores filled with tyloses, outgrowths of certain cells that close the pore. This makes White Oak great for liquid-based projects (ships, barrels). Eastern Red Cedar contains aromatic oils that resist decay and insects.

I’ve been making these wooden mountain pieces lately, and they’ve quickly become one of my favorite small builds. They’re simple, but they do a really good job of filling that empty space on a shelf without feeling busy. Each one is cut, stained, and painted by hand, so no two sets turn out exactly the same.

Today’s project took a turn… right off the edge of the cup and onto the table. I like to think I’m in control of the shop, but clearly the epoxy had other plans.

But every good craftsman knows that mistakes are just part of the process. The table may be sticky, but the passion’s still strong.
