While scouting out a project for a client last week we loved seeing the Spring Beauties in the forest. These are one of the many spring wildflowers, which are the first foods for our pollinators. One of the largest threats to the health of these early wildflowers are invasive species like honeysuckle which tower over the small flowers and block out the sunlight from reaching them on the forest floor. We are excited to help remove the invasives and see what other natives come back.

Although Fry Dirtworks & Conservation is young on paper, the idea behind this business is many generations old. Forged on the Fry Farm, which is represented by fifth, sixth, and seventh generations of land stewards in this picture. The Fry Farm was honored to receive certified Tree Farm status at the end of 2023. We look forward to working with other families who are part of a legacy farm or are building their own legacy.

The goal for this area is to return it to a mix of prairie and Oak Savanna. To save the landowner money and minimize the mulching debris left on the ground, brush piles were created and will be burned.

This beautiful Oak Tree was hidden amongst the cedars which were slowly shading out its lower branches. Our mulching project uncovered its low reaching branches reminding us that in its youth this Oak was surrounded by prairie grasses which allowed the lower branches to have plenty of sunlight. The lack of prescribed fire over the years has resulted in it slowly being choked, but not anymore. We can’t wait to see how it responds to all the sunlight again!
