Over 200 Acres of Oak Savana with 1.5 miles of the Puchyan River flowing throughout with 9 Native archeologicial sites scattered throughout the property. Over time, invasive's such as buckthorn and honeysuckle made their way into this property, overwhelming the native habitat.

These landowners worked closely with the local NRCS office and had a Forest Stewardship Management Plan approved, making them eligible for cost sharing grants. Being eligble to receive grants shaves decades off of the total time needed to restore this property.

In January we came in and mulched 15 acres of invasives and the land owners plan to treat the regrowth throughout the summer themselves. This is a small step taken for the conservancy, but gives the land owners a great view of the future.

After two months, last Friday we completed our first right of way and ditch bank restoration project for Outagamie County.

Roughly 3,300 feet of access needed to be created on nearly both sides of this ditch. Temporary crossings were constructed in two places so we could move whole trees to better areas to grind and get the rock we need to reconstruct the corners of this ditch.

Nearly all 3,300 feet of this ditch was undercutting and eroding away. We sloped the banks and stabilized the banks with coir matting to help prevent erosion long enough to allow grasses to grow which stabilizes the bank and prevents these banks from eroding for a very long time.

We needed over 150 ton of rock to reinforce the corners in this corridor. The inside corners were dug to a lesser slope to take pressure off of the previously undercut outside bank.

Projects like this are starting to become our specialty. We’re clearing the way for conservation.

Yes we go west.

Last month we were out in Richland Center, cutting in some trails on a side of a bluff, trimming back overgrown trails and repaired a small spring fed pond.

It’s not often we find ourselves in the driftless area of Wisconsin, but the views sure make up for the distance.

A few months ago back in January and February we were creating right of ways.

20’-30’ wide corridor of Drainge ditch access for just over 2 miles.

Buckthorn, Boxelder, Dead ash, Maple, and cottonwood. Everything was to be mulched, as burning was not possible. Everything that was too big to chip or had lumber value was cut to length and stacked, the tree tops were then mulched.

This summer all Woody stem vegetation regrowth will be treated to help establish and maintain a grass right of way corridor for optimal drainage.

Back in September we were called to start our largest job to date. Here’s what we did as subcontractors for 14 weeks.

Our original task was to create access and make a right of way for 1 mile of stream restoration, and wetland restoration on this 100 acre project.

We spent roughly one month making a corridor for the new stream construction, along with eliminating any invasive we came across, and then prepped 30 acres for grading to be done which was mostly brush.

Once we finished all the site prep, We were asked to stay and assist their crew in the actual construction of the new stream and the backfilling of the old ditch. Once the stream was done we prepped the site for seeding and spread straw on the entire site.

We did a multitude of different tasks on the project and learned some new skills. Habitat, Stream, and Wetland Restoration, is something we can look forward to doing more of in the future.

Back in September we completed quite a unique project. An island. Our job was to remove all invasive brush and to take down all ash trees that were affected by the emerald ash borer.

This is the first step towards restoring this piece of property. The land owner will be planting native trees and grasses in attempt to get this property back to what it once was.

Not only do these property owners have a better view, they now have useable property. This was our first job on an island, we look forward to doing another one someday.

Some of you may know that we have been looking for a larger machine. After months of looking and research here it is.

This set up has us very impressed with its productivity and also producing and even finer finish product then before. In the next coming weeks we have some projects that will really put this to the test. We are very eager to show what this machine is capable of.
