It's been fun this summer to highlight our favorite vacation spots. 🏝️🏕️

We've shared many multi-generational camps, national and state parks, and even some spots in our own backyards. The theme in many of the pictures? Family.

So for our final favorite vacation spot series, we'd like to continue the theme with Aaron Bailey's fantastic shot from a recent trip to Tennessee. When it comes to a memorable vacation, there's no doubt that great scenery adds a lot. But at the end of the day, these five kiddos are what makes Aaron's work - and life outside of work - the most meaningful.

Happy first day of meteorological fall!🍁

Did you know that an oak tree can produce thousands of acorns in a single year?

Years when oak trees produce unusually large acorn crops are called “mast years” and could mean more oak trees tomorrow if conditions are right.

Acorns are also an important food source for deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, and many other wildlife.

Look around the next time you’re walking your property or in your local woods and watch if this fall’s acorns become seedlings next spring! 🌱

He has a long history and love of wrestling, which he’s passed along to his two sons (and daughter who prefers horses over wrestling mats). Maybe that’s why Jason Wenrich, FORECON’s Director of Cerification and Sustainability, is so good at encouraging and mentoring others in the office. When we need a supporter or just a pep talk, Jason is our guy!

At first glance, this forest looks lush, green, and healthy. 🌿

But look a little closer and you’ll see the ferns have taken over much of the forest floor. They’ve created dense competition for space and resources and are potentially limiting the regeneration of desirable trees and other native vegetation.

A healthy-looking forest isn’t always a healthy forest. 😉

FORECON has been working on this property to restore balance and give the forest the opportunity to regenerate. In the “after” picture, you can see the difference. With the ferns treated and brought under control, the forest floor is more open, and the overall stand looks cleaner, healthier, and better balanced.

When Gene celebrated his FORECON work anniversary earlier this year, his colleagues said, "Good luck getting a picture of him. Gene never leaves the woods!" 🌳

For this week's favorite vacation spot series, Gene shares with us a picture of the Michigan Upper Peninsula. We often think "summer" when we think of a favorite vacation spot but for Gene, a few feet of snow and his favorite pup are all he needs to relax and unwind.

🍂 The woods are changing, the mornings are getting colder, and that old hunting spot is starting to look pretty inviting.

Long before GPS and high-tech gear, hunters found places to sit, watch, and wait. This old sitting post is a reminder of a tradition when time and patience were non-negotiables.

Of course, hunters aren’t the only ones keeping busy this time of year. A nearby coyote den shows that wildlife has its own plans for the season. And the coyote tooth? Well, it's evidence that somebody has been doing some hunting of their own.

Whether you’re heading out for an hour or the full day, here’s to cold mornings, safe hunts, and always time well spent in the woods. 🍁

Ever wonder why a forester could spend all day in the woods? 🌳Look closely at this red oak log to see a story of how the forest has changed over time.

Last week, we were on a longtime client’s property in Cattaraugus County, NY, for a timber sale. If you look at the growth rings near the bark of this log, you can see that the last 12–15 rings are noticeably wider.

The last cut on this property was a crown thinning in the summer of 2014. Since then, the growth rate of the remaining trees has accelerated with less competition for light and growing space.

The first two to three decades of growth show another period of widely spaced rings, when the forest was first becoming established and the trees had more room to grow.

How do you like that? More than 60 years of forest history in a single log (and proof that good forest management really does pay off!)

FORECON’s Summer Vacation Series 🌲

One theme we’ve noticed in our favorite vacation spot series? Family camps.

Camp Tall Pines has been part of Gunner Fravel's family for nearly 50 years. Gunner, a Staff Forester at FORECON, shares, "I love spending time with family and hunting there in the Fall."

Family camps like this are a great example of how sustainable forest management and multi-generational ownership go hand in hand. Taking care of the land today helps keep it productive, healthy, and in the family for years to come.

🍄 Tis the season! Who else is looking?

FORECON staff have spotted some spectacular mushrooms near Cook Forest, PA, and Arcade, NY. After careful observation and absolutely no mushroom-related taste tests, we have three leading suspects:

Golden Spindles - A bunch of bright yellow-orange mushrooms standing straight up like they’re waiting for someone to take attendance.

Chicken of the Woods (maybe?) - A mushroom that appears to have misunderstood the assignment and dressed like a rotisserie.

Chanterelles - Golden, wavy, and shaped like tiny forest trumpets. No permits have been issued for woodland jazz.

Reminder from your friendly neighborhood forest professionals: Not every mushroom is edible, even if “it looks like chicken.” Observe. Photograph. Admire. Do not snack on the evidence.
