An insurance company can refuse coverage unless certain repairs are completed. That creates real pressure, but it does not automatically mean your home violates code.

Virginia’s building code generally does not require an existing home to meet every new construction standard unless an unsafe condition exists. Your house did not suddenly become illegal because the code changed.
