Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot) 🐝 Native to Connecticut and much of eastern North America, Monarda fistulosa is a pollinator plant in the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Its bilabiate, lavender-hued flowers are specialized for long-tongued pollinators—particularly Bombus spp. (bumble bees), Megachilidae (leafcutter and mason bees), and even Archilochus colubris (ruby-throated hummingbirds).

Peak bloom occurs July–August, providing mid-summer nectar and pollen at a time when floral resources may be declining. This native thrives in dry meadows and open woods with well-drained soils.

Actaea racemosa 🌿 Commonly known as Black Cohosh, this native perennial is a keystone species in Connecticut’s deciduous forests. Reaching heights of up to 6 feet, it produces striking white inflorescences in early summer that serve as a vital nectar source for native pollinators, including syrphid flies and solitary bees.

Black cohosh prefers moist, well-drained soils and partial to full shade. This native is slow to establish, especially when planted from seed. It may take 2–3 years to flower, but the wait is worth it!

Last weekend we visited one out our favorite past projects - the native meadow at Salisbury school 🌿 This large meadow was brainstormed by students of the school when faced with the challenge of creating a more sustainable campus. Encompassing 5 acres, the final project is a home for many pollinators and includes oxeye sunflower, purple coneflower, blue vervain, big bluestem, butterfly milkweed.

Erythronium americanum, commonly known as trout lily 💛 One of the earliest spring ephemerals to grace Connecticut’s woodlands, this native perennial is named for its mottled leaves resembling brook trout. It plays a vital role in forest ecosystems, supporting early pollinators like mining bees. Though its yellow, nodding flowers last only a few weeks, trout lily forms dense colonies over time, creating a beautiful, low maintenance groundcover ideal for shade gardens and naturalized landscapes.

Uvularia sessilifolia (sessile-leaved bellwort) 🌱 This spring ephemeral is native to rich, deciduous woodlands across the Northeast. Characterized by its nodding, pale yellow campanulate flowers and sessile, lanceolate leaves, Uvularia sessilifolia plays an important role in early-season pollinator support.

Thriving in part to full shade with well-drained, humus-rich soils, it’s an excellent choice for woodland restoration or native shade gardens. As a member of the Colchicaceae family, it’s also a great example of regional botanical diversity.

📍 Spotted in Ghent, NY in the early spring.

Trillium erectum (Red Trillium or Wake Robin) ♥️
Traditionally found in rich, undisturbed forests, this native perennial brings early-season color to woodland gardens. Its pungent smell attracts carrion flies, which act as its primary pollinator. Trillium reaches 8-14” and prefers shady and moist areas where it can naturalize gently over time.

HABITAT RESTORATION 〰️ We work with wetlands and woodlands to reclaim ecosystem stability. Our team is experienced in reading landscapes to understand not only the unique history, but also how new weather patterns, disturbance, and non-native species are affecting the land currently. Habitat restoration is a mix of invasive species removal, native plantings, hydrology remediation, and subsequent monitoring and maintenance.
