You know what nobody thinks about when they're picking out paint colors for the new house? What's happening under it.
That flat spot isn't flat by accident. It's cut to grade and sloped just enough to shed water away from the house, then compacted good so it won't settle and crack the foundation a few years down the road.
Then the footing trenches go in. Those lines cut into the dirt are dug to exact depth and width and checked with the instrument set up in the back of the pic, because if the footings aren't level and square, nothing built on top of them will be either. A crooked foundation is one of those things you can't fix after the fact without tearing into walls, so I'd rather take the extra hour here than let a homeowner deal with that headache down the road.
