If any of you have a house from Myrtle Beach north to Oak Island we can be there! My island hopping route is a long ride but I enjoy it. Thanks to Jay Young for giving me some stops in between to break up the drive.

I could never say enough how important it is to keep centipede cut at lower levels. My experience both this year and in years past is that when we go 14 to 17 days without cutting, the centipede suffers when we either go to dormancy or come out of it. This year has proven no different. 1" to 1.5" is the recommended height. It will save your lawn.

We have been out on turf now for almost a month after the frosts in March. We are definitely seeing injury. Low areas and wet lawns suffered immensely. Some lawns that were already greening have had damage. It will heal over time as the soil heats up. Remember to keep your lawn cut as short as possible without injuring turf. This forces roots to grow into soil better and not over one another. Water when needed. A silver or gray color is a good indication.

I get a ton of questions on how to green your turf more quickly. Mowing it very short after the last chance of frost will help. The brown on top blocks sunlight from reaching the base of the grass, which is where it grows. If you do this once or twice early, your turf will green more quickly.

The last 3 days of rain and snow have dropped soil temperatures by almost 17 degrees! I'm sure that not only with freezing temperatures to come, but what we've already had, that we will be starting over with greenup on turf. This is why we never apply fertilizer until after the last frost. I encourage all home lawn care men and women to do the same. This can and will kill turf. Don't believe the hype by all the big companies that are selling their w**d and feed.

There are definitely a lot of questions of frozen precipitation coming this weekend. Whether or not it comes to fruition is yet to be seen. It will get colder though, and we will flirt with freezing temperatures for 4 or 5 nights. If you have any plants that can be protected, please do so. Some can be moved or covered to keep the cold off of them. As for the turf, we will see in the coming week what will happen.
