The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette recently spent time inside the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation, including a conversation with Jason Wright, principal designer at modus studio, about the connection between design and making.

Now, a year after opening, students are experiencing that idea firsthand through full-scale fabrication, mass timber, and a building designed to be part of their education.

modus studio is officially 18.

Old enough to get inked, buy a lottery ticket, smoke some (candy) ci******es, and apparently start taking skincare seriously.

We celebrated 18 years the best way we know how: good people, a little time away from the studio, and plenty of reasons to laugh. To everyone who has been part of the last 18 years—our team, clients, collaborators, and community—thank you for creating alongside us.

As construction moves forward on Woodland Junior High’s new campus, pieces of the site’s history are staying with it. The existing barns will be preserved and repurposed as outdoor learning space and a greenhouse, connecting the school’s future to the land’s agricultural past.

Around them, the new school continues to take shape with mass timber, natural light, and connections to the surrounding landscape at the center of the design.

Our team recently joined civil engineers at the University of Arkansas for a practice round of impact testing of our mass timber ICC-500 storm shelters. This gave the team a chance to test the setup, gather early observations, and prepare for the next round of testing.

Next stop: Dallas.

August’s sketch challenge!

We asked our team to sketch a chapel in 20 minutes. This exercise reminds us that there's never just one way to approach a design.

Our intern, Caleb Cole, wrapped up his summer at modus and is heading back to the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas. From model-making and design work to getting a closer look at the studio's day-to-day life, we’re glad Caleb spent his time learning and creating alongside our team.

We’re grateful for the ideas, energy, and curiosity he brought to the studio. Thanks for spending your summer with us, Caleb!

The mountain bike trails at Riverside Park in Searcy, AR are under construction, bringing miles of new trail through the woods and bluffs along the Little Red River.

Designed to make the most of the existing landscape, the trails will offer a new way to explore, ride, and experience the park. Construction is still underway, with hopes to open portions of the trail system to the public in the near future.

We’re looking forward to seeing riders out there when the trails are ready!

Every finish tells part of the story.

Material boards are where our interior designers begin shaping the experience of a space, carefully layering texture, color, and materiality to support the way a project will be used. Every selection is intentional, balancing aesthetics and performance while reinforcing the overall design vision.

For Juniper, which is currently under construction just south of the University of Arkansas campus, those selections were guided by the "Ozark Zen" concept, drawing inspiration from the Natural State through warm earth tones, natural wood accents, and calming materials that promote well-being. The interiors support every aspect of student life, from focused study spaces and hospitality-inspired gathering areas to elevated residential units designed for comfort and everyday living.

Long before construction is complete, the experience of a space begins here, one material at a time.

430 Dickson has anchored downtown Fayetteville for more than a century.

Originally built in the 1890s as the Bates Brothers Market, 430 Dickson has been home to generations of businesses, each leaving its mark on one of Fayetteville's most recognizable corners.

Our approach wasn't to erase that history, but to reveal it. By removing layers added over time, restoring the building's original character, and creating a flexible space for the future, the renovation honored more than a century of change while opening the door to what came next.

Today, that next chapter is Tin Roof Fayetteville, a place filled with live music, celebrations, and community.

It's a reminder that architecture doesn't end when construction is complete. The best buildings evolve through the people who gather inside them.

Meet Ernie the Destroyer.

Built in our fabrication studio, Ernie is a custom testing rig designed to support research on mass timber FEMA storm shelters. Every cut and weld plays a role in preparing for structural testing.
