🦅🍗 EAGLE 101: WHY ARE EAGLES STRICT CARNIVORES? 🍗🦅

With our shared photos of the parent feeding the young in the nest earlier today, we thought this a good opportunity to talk about eagle diets. Just like their parents, the young in the nest eat meat. No berries, grains, or plants of any kind. Bald Eagles (and all eagles) are strict carnivores. They are apex predators sitting at the top of the food chain that feed solely on other animals, living and dead. But have you ever wondered why they only eat meat?

Well, the short and basic answer is that is how they were made and have evolved over time. Most apex predators are strict carnivores. However, it is somewhat curious when you consider that there are other apex predators that are also omnivores, notable examples being bears and humans. We eat food from across the entire spectrum, from honey to steaks to carrots. There are also many types of birds that eat both meat and plants as part of their diets, but not raptors, and certainly not eagles.

It really boils down to their digestive system. Despite eagles being able to digest whole bones to absorb calcium in their diet with that powerful stomach acid, plant matter and fiber are things they are incapable of breaking down and digesting. They lack the mechanism to process non-meats. So even if you fed an eagle some veggies, it would do the bird no good as they wouldn't be able to derive nutrition from it. So there you have it. Eagles are strict carnivores by design and not by choice.

Here we see a beautiful Bald Eagle with a freshly caught lunch clutched in its talons. Great shot, Seth Vreeman! 🦅😯😎👍👍

This year we’ve had quite a few residential and commercial customers water very late into the winterizing season. We’ve also had customers forget to shut their sprinkler mains off resulting in backflow problems. Don’t worry. Your system will be fine. We keep a full stock of repair kits and we will still be able to blow your system out. Your system will not freeze below ground from an overnight frost. Bare with us, If you are on our list you will be taken care of. Thank you.

Give to a great cause.
