Nature of Work
Midwest Builders is a commercial construction company. We build and remodel wood framed buildings, metal framed buildings, Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings, as well as masonry and panelized structures. Carpenter/Laborers for Midwest Builders, Inc. must possess skills and perform work which is basic to most building construction. Work performed can be, but is not limited to the following: erect wood and steel and panelized framework for buildings; wood & steel studs, IMP panels, set rafters; hang drywall, some siding & roofing. Experience in trim and finish work is also beneficial. Carpenters will be required to use a wide variety of hand and power tools, and they must be able to maintain company tools in good, safe working order. They must be organized and pick up after themselves, keeping the work site safe for themselves and others on the project. As a small company our carpenters may be assigned duties not specific to the carpentry trade. They must be willing to assist and work well with other tradesmen on a given project.

Carpenter/Laborers for Midwest Builders, Inc. usually work with or around other construction tradesmen. They work indoors, outdoors, and often in tight places. All carpenters must be in good physical condition. They will have to do considerable climbing, lifting, and carrying to perform their work. They must also be able to do a great deal of reaching, balancing, kneeling, crawling and turning.
Education and Training
Prior carpentry experience and training is essential. It can be acquired informally through "learning-by-working;" through company on-the-job training programs, by attending trade or vocational/technical schools, through unilaterally (management or labor) sponsored trainee programs; through registered labor-management apprenticeship programs, or a combination of the above. It is generally accepted that the more formalized training programs give more comprehensive skills training. Recommended high school courses include algebra, general science, mechanical drawing, English, blueprint reading, and general shop.
A Carpenter for MBI should be a person who enjoys doing precision work, have pride of craftsmanship, the ability to work without close supervision, and be able to adapt to a wide variety of conditions. Manual dexterity and the ability to solve math problems quickly and accurately is necessary for those who wish to become top craftsmen.
Personal Appearance and Safety Requirements
Midwest Builders, Inc. expects their employees to look professional in their work. Employees are expected to practice good hygiene, hair and facial hair groomed and neat. Clothing shall be clean, and in good condition. We supply short sleeve work shirts, hard hats and other personal protective equipment. Long pants (jeans or work pants), steel toed shoes are also required.
Midwest Builders, Inc. is a smoke free company. Smoking is not allowed on company property, vehicles or customer job sites.
Midwest Builders, Inc. is a drug free work place. Pre-Employment and random drug testing is performed on all of our employees that drive company vehicles and work on customer job sites.
Personal use of cell phones, texting, etc. is not allowed during hours of work or driving to and from jobsites. (Many of our customers will not allow them on their facilities.)
