We worked on a deck that was 2 inches out of level along with a laundry list of other issues. Please please please even if you know the person make sure they have current insurance and check a few things off this list before hiring. We've seen too many of these lately.
Before hiring any contractor, do your due diligence.
1. Look up their website and social media pages, read reviews. Check to see if they have any certifications or memberships in professional organizations. This will help you get a sense of their reputation and level of expertise.
2. Check with case net and the BBB to make sure any large red flags arent present.
3. Get multiple quotes: Don't settle for the first contractor you find. Get at least three quotes from different companies to compare prices and services. This will help you make an informed decision and ensure that you're getting a fair price.
4. Check for licensing and INSURANCE!: Make sure any contractor you're considering is licensed (if applicable) and insured. This will protect you in case of accidents or damages during the project. Ask to see their license and insurance documents and verify them with the relevant authorities. They should be able to give you a copy of thier current certificate of insurance or for large project have you listed on the COI once hired.
5. Get everything in writing: Before starting any work, make sure you have a written contract that outlines the scope of the project, timeline, and payment schedule. This will help avoid misunderstandings or disputes down the line.
Finally, trust your instincts when choosing a contractor. If something feels off or too good to be true, it probably is. Choose a contractor who communicates clearly, listens to your needs, and makes you feel comfortable.
