Justice can start with design. What can we do together?

I attended this year’s virtual Bioneers conference to hear a discussion about scaling up permaculture design. I was delighted to also hear a keynote by Deanna Van Buren from Designing Justice & Designing Spaces. Catch it here and let’s talk about how we can design a just and sustainable ecosystem for human prosperity.

Architect Deanna Van Buren shares how her studio works to counter the traditional adversarial and punitive architecture that characterizes our legal system by creating spaces and buildings that enable Restorative Justice, community building, and housing for people coming out of incarceration.

As I design my homestead in Ferndale I observe evidence of the invisible structures that facilitate systemic interconnection and resiliency. The same principles can be applied to human systems. The collective experience has repeatedly shown us the weaknesses in the systems we have built to support us. The first principle of Permaculture is to observe and interact with the system. Clues to the problems that have plagued our society surround us. NDGS applies these principles to any situation with the support from our interdisciplinary team. The NDGS business model itself is representative of these principles. We are turtles all the way down.

The abundance and power of nature can achieve more than a crew of humans could ever hope to achieve. Let NDGS bring nature into your project through thoughtful design and implementation. We will meet you where you are at to discover what multiplier we can bring to your project.

Observe and interact is the first of Holmgren’s design principles. Holmgren writes “ by taking the time to engage with nature we can design solutions that suit our particular situation.” NDGS uses ecological design principles to put your project in context and finding novel solutions to the problems you seek to address.

My backyard pond is designed as an outdoor living room where I sit and relax. The sound of moving water, watching fish go about their business calms my mind. I designed this area intentionally, overlapping many of my goals in an area less than 100 sq ft. Let NDGS design your urban homestead to be productive and relaxing while minimizing maintenance.

On a recent walk through a Washington state forest I could see the passage of time before me on the forest floor. Stumps of old growth trees dotted the landscape of a timber farm. Broken logging implements dotted the landscape along the trail. Their presence tells the story of a landscape designed for human use but looks like wilderness. Covered with more life than when the tree was alive, this stump shows that death provides for coming generations. With good design, we can do the same for any project.

As a discipline grows, we find new ways to describe the problems faced. NDGS uses the doughnut economic model with the core Permaculture ethics; earth care, fair share and limits to growth. We stay up to date on the most recent practice and research, giving NDGS the edge you need to make your project a reality.
