Concrete is pretty amazing stuff.

We can adjust the mix, control the workability, manage the air, and design it to perform where we need it to. 🧪

But concrete is also made from natural materials—and nature doesn't always behave exactly the way we'd like.

This month, we're taking a look at the less-than-perfect side of concrete. Cracks, pop-outs, scaling, and other things that can happen even when everyone involved is doing their best.

Take this crack, for example. 👀

See how it follows the edge of the shadow? When part of a slab is shaded while another part is in the sun, those areas can behave differently as the concrete sets. That can contribute to a crack forming along that boundary.

We can't know for certain after the fact, but the pattern makes it a possibility.

We can do a lot to help concrete perform the way we want it to. But sometimes, nature gets a vote, too.

And that's where things can get interesting.

So how do we decide how concrete should behave?
The mix design. 🧮
Concrete starts with a few basic components—rock, sand, cementitious materials, water, and sometimes admixtures. But change the variables, and you can create a mix designed for a completely different job.
A driveway doesn't need the same formula as a bridge deck.
A wall doesn't need the same mix as a warehouse floor.
It's a little like a math problem: change the numbers, change the answer.
💡 The right mix isn't about having more of everything. It's about getting the right combination for the job.

Modern Concrete made a special stop at Greater Heights Academy for "Touch A Truck" last Friday! 🚧

We were happy to display a loader and a mixer truck for the school's event. It's always fun to put some of our equipment on display and give students a chance to see what these machines are all about.
