Storm Watch Field Notes

The garden is getting a much-needed drink today, but Iโ€™ll admit Iโ€™m staying inside while the storms roll through.

Last nightโ€™s weather brought some strong winds, and we were fortunate to only have a few branches come down. Seeing the reports from other areas, we know many people werenโ€™t as lucky.

While I wait for the skies to clear, Iโ€™m curious

The next season is already beginning behind the scenes at Plant Lore Field Society.

Todayโ€™s preview: a small trial of fall kitchen garden starts that Iโ€™ll be growing out over the next several weeks with the hope of bringing some to upcoming markets.

This seasonโ€™s lineup includes:
- Black Magic Kale
- Peppermint Swiss Chard
- Salanova Lettuce
- Santo Cilantro
- Sweet Marjoram
- Red Rubin Basil
- Spicy Saber Basil
- Thai Basil
- Genovese Basil

Some will be ready sooner, some will take their time. Fall gardens have their own rhythm, and Iโ€™m excited to see what thrives in our Kentucky weather. If all goes well, look for these joining the nursery table in September and October.

A good garden isnโ€™t always about having the most flowers. Sometimes itโ€™s about the conversation between plants.

This combination caught my eye:
- Little Honey Hydrangea โ€” bringing bright golden foliage and a soft, mounding shape.
- Sedum โ€˜Cherry Fizzโ€™ โ€” adding deep burgundy tones, upright structure, and late-season blooms.
- Blue Fescue (or something similar) โ€” adding a fine texture and cool blue-green contrast.

Together, they create a balance of:
โ€ข bold and delicate textures
โ€ข warm and cool colors
โ€ข structure that carries through the seasons

Stay tuned as I attempt to keep the borers at bay! Iโ€™ve seen a few remedies and Iโ€™ll share tips as I experiment.

Across many cultures, pumpkins and gourds have symbolized abundance, protection, and the changing of the seasons. They marked the harvestโ€”the reward after months of patient work.

Every pumpkin begins as a flower no larger than your hand, quietly growing day by day until autumn arrives.

Today, Casperita is showing its very first pumpkin. It's still small enough to fit in the palm of my hand, but it's a reminder that every harvest begins with moments like these.

Maybe that's why pumpkins still feel a little magical.

Sometimes I know within seconds that a plant belongs in the collection.

Sunstone was one of those.

I actually had one in my own garden before Plant Lore even existed. The color almost glows, nonstop flower power, and it has that effortless wildflower look while still feeling refined enough for a designed garden.

When it came time to decide what to grow for the nursery, Sunstone immediately made the list. Some plants you choose because they're new or different. Others you choose because they've already earned a place in your own garden.

Seeing them arrive in my latest Terra Nova shipment was a pretty exciting moment, and I can't wait to watch these mature as I prepare them for sale.

Nature is brutal... and fascinating.

This is a cicada killer wasp carrying its prey. Despite the intimidating name and size, they're actually one of the more docile wasps around and spend their time hunting cicadas rather than bothering people.

Every garden has its own little ecosystemโ€”and moments like this remind me that we're just visitors in it.
