Many homeowners don’t realize that septic systems rely on proper airflow to function correctly.

Vent pipes help:
✔ Equalize pressure
✔ Move gases safely away from your home
✔ Support healthy bacterial activity inside the system

If you’ve ever wondered why plumbing vents extend through your roof, now you know. Every part of the system has a purpose.

💬 Did you know your septic system relies on ventilation?

💡 Tip Tuesday: Be Careful What You Plant Near Your Drain Field

Trees and septic systems don’t always make good neighbors.

Tree roots naturally seek out moisture and can:
❌ Invade pipes
❌ Damage drain lines
❌ Create costly repairs

Keep large trees and aggressive-root plants well away from your drain field. When in doubt, ask before you plant.

💬 Question:
What’s the largest tree on your property?

A dripping faucet or running toilet might not seem like a big deal—but your septic system notices.

Even small leaks can:
✔ Add hundreds of gallons of extra water each month
✔ Put unnecessary stress on your system
✔ Reduce the effectiveness of wastewater treatment

One of the easiest ways to protect your septic system is to fix leaks as soon as you find them.

💬 Question:
Do you have any faucets or toilets around the house that need attention?

A properly installed and maintained septic system can often last 25–40 years or more.

The keys are simple:
✔ Routine pumping
✔ Water conservation
✔ Protecting the drain field
✔ Addressing small issues early

Most major septic failures don't happen overnight—they develop over years of neglect. A little maintenance goes a long way.

💬 How old do you think the septic system on your property is?

One of the biggest challenges in excavation and site work is managing water. Whether it's rainwater, runoff, or poor drainage, water can:
• Erode soil
• Damage foundations
• Saturate drain fields
• Create costly property issues

That's why proper grading and drainage planning are critical parts of any successful project. Good dirt work isn't just about moving dirt—it's about controlling where water goes.

💬 Have you ever dealt with a drainage problem on your property?

Many homeowners know where their mailbox is, where their water meter is, and where their power meter is—but have no idea where their septic tank is located.

Knowing the location of your:
✔ Tank
✔ Access lids
✔ Drain field
can save time, money, and frustration when maintenance or repairs are needed. A simple sketch or photo can make future service much easier.

💬 Do you know exactly where your septic tank is located?

Many septic problems start in the kitchen sink. Even small amounts of grease, cooking oil, and food scraps can build up over time and create issues in your plumbing and septic system.

Instead:
✔ Let grease cool and throw it away
✔ Scrape food into the trash before washing dishes
✔ Use sink strainers to catch debris
Your septic system is designed to treat wastewater—not leftovers.

💬 Question:
What's the strangest thing you've ever accidentally sent down the drain?

☀️ Take a Walk Around Your Yard! Nice weather makes this the perfect time to inspect your property. As you walk around, look for:
✔ Standing water
✔ Soil erosion
✔ Exposed lids or risers
✔ Areas where water isn't draining properly

Small issues are often easier—and less expensive—to address before they become larger problems. A five-minute walk today can help prevent headaches tomorrow.
💬 Question:
What's the first thing you usually notice when inspecting your property?

🚽 Your Septic Tank Has Layers! Inside your septic tank, waste naturally separates into three layers:
⬆️ Scum floats to the top
⬇️ Solids settle to the bottom
💧 Liquid wastewater remains in the middle

The liquid layer flows out to the drain field for final treatment. Over time, solids build up—which is why routine pumping is important.
💬 Did you know your septic tank separates waste into layers?
