Cooking at home has increased and given that we live in the South, the use of cooking oils (vegetable oils such as olive, canola, or avocado; crisco, bacon grease, etc) has also increased.
We see plenty of calls each year due to major issues that can always be traced back to people pouring oil down the sink drain.
The oil hardens and coats the sink lines, catching with it any food debris or other solids that might move through the pipes. Over time, these can cause blockages and clogs, leading to awful odors, slow drains, standing water, and full-on blockages that can even cause raw sewage to come back into your home.
A common misconception is that using hot water down the drain heats the pipes and thereby negates the oil hardening and causing clogs. This isn't true and honestly worse because it allows the oil to travel further into the lines, causing clogs in areas that cost a lot of money and property damage to get to in order to repair, such as ripping your yard up to get to the pipes leading out to the water system. (If you aren't eating today, go ahead and look up "fatbergs" to see what happens if the oil makes it into the sewers! These things cause significant damage and require specialized removal, which in turn causes water rates to increase).
Anyway, instead of dumping your oil, consider a few alternatives:
1. Do like granma and keep your bacon grease in a jar for eggs, potatoes, and other things.
2. Get a storage vessel for permaliquid oils such as canola or other cooking oils that you use. Once it's full, you can recycle the oil at a renderer or take it to a local recycling center in Florence Country. You can pour whatever oils you want into the container - they don't care if it's all mixed up.
3. If you accidentally forget, you can use a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar and a cup of water. Plug the drain for five or ten minutes, and then pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. This loosens the grime and the boiling water increases pressure, pushing grease down the drain.
And if all else fails, give us a call - we're happy to help you get stubborn clogs removed safely and professionally. We'll leave behind nothing but a mason jar for you to start your collection!
