As summer draws to an end and Labor Day approaches, it’s the perfect time to think about fall landscaping projects for homes and businesses.

Planting trees and shrubs, aerating grassy areas and pruning are just a few of the landscaping tasks that are well suited for fall. Cooler temperatures reduce stress on plants, while the soil is still warm enough to encourage healthy root development.

A little work this fall can make a big difference in helping your landscape finish the year strong and giving it a head start for spring!

We want to recognize Peter for his outstanding dedication to C&C and the Ludlow branch.

This year, Peter took on new responsibilities and learned new skills. During the winter, he learned how to plow. Now, Peter has taken on another challenge by learning to mow, and, as with everything else, he’s excelling.

While Peter continues to develop new skills, he still works hard behind the scenes, handling the enhancement work needed to keep our clients’ properties looking their best!

His willingness to learn, grow and take on whatever is needed is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Peter, for all of your hard work and dedication to the Ludlow Branch and our company!

Please join us in congratulating Peter on this very well-deserved Employee Spotlight!

Did you know? About 75% of flowering plants rely on pollinators, including bees. Without them, many of the plants that add beauty, shade and diversity to our landscapes would struggle to reproduce.

Pollinator-friendly landscaping at home can make a difference. Native plants, flowering trees and blooms that provide food throughout the growing season can create valuable habitat for bees and other pollinators.

Start with native Vermont species that resist regional pests and require less care:
🌳 Red Maple
🌸 Purple Coneflower
💮 New England Aster
🌻 Black-Eyed Susan
🪷 Stonecrop

How you mow your lawn matters—especially during the heat of August.

Raise your mower blade to leave grass a little longer, which helps shade the soil, retain moisture and protect roots from summer stress. Keep blades sharp for a clean cut and avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. Remember: A heat-stressed lawn doesn't need an aggressive cut. Cutting it too short can add even more stress.

A few simple adjustments to your mowing routine can help keep your lawn healthier through the final stretch of summer.

Robert Frost famously wrote, “Good fences make good neighbors.” We’d add that they make great landscaping, too.

For homeowners, a fence can add privacy, safety and curb appeal. For commercial properties, it defines spaces, enhances security and creates a polished, professional first impression.

This split-rail fence does it all—clearly defining the property while adding timeless character and charm.

Beautiful plants, healthy lawns and well-placed trees do more than enhance your property’s appearance. According to the National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture, research shows that attractive landscaping can provide lasting benefits you can enjoy every day, including:

🌳 Increasing your home’s value
💰 Helping lower energy and utility costs
🌞 Trees provide shade that keeps outdoor spaces cooler
🌱 Grass stays much cooler than sidewalks, driveways and streets
🏡 Attractive landscapes improve the quality of life in neighborhoods by creating more welcoming, enjoyable places to live

A thoughtfully designed landscape doesn't just make your home look better—it makes it more valuable, more efficient and helps create a healthier, more vibrant community for everyone.

If you take a quick walk around your property today, will you find overgrown shrubs? Are landscape bed edges disappearing? Is your mulch looking thin?

These small issues can quickly affect the appearance and health of your landscape. Professional landscapers know what to look for and can address problems before they become bigger, more expensive repairs.

Regular maintenance keeps your home or business looking its best while protecting your landscape investment. A local landscaper knows your region, understands New England's changing seasons, provides faster, more personalized service and can recommend the right care to keep your property healthy and beautiful year-round. Whether residential or commercial, watering the grass longer doesn’t always mean better. 💧

The goal is deep, infrequent watering, which encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil. Deeper roots help your grass stay greener and more resilient during hot, dry weather.

A smarter watering routine now can help your grass stay healthy through the rest of the summer and prepare it for a strong fall.

➡️ Hint: If your footprints linger in the grass, it’s a sign your green area may need water.
