⚠️ NOT ALL GATE OPERATOR BIDS ARE CREATED EQUAL ⚠️
When comparing bids for an automatic gate system, don’t look at the bottom-line price alone. Two estimates may appear to include the same thing, while the quality, reliability and safety of the finished installation are completely different.
Before hiring an installer, make sure each proposal clearly answers these questions:
✅ What exact operator brand and model are being installed?
The operator must be properly sized for your gate’s length, weight, construction and frequency of use. Ask whether the warranty applies to residential or commercial use.
✅ What safety equipment is included?
A professional installation should include the required monitored safety devices, such as photo eyes and/or safety edges, based on the gate’s design. A gate operator is powerful equipment—not just a motor with a remote.
✅ How will the gate itself be prepared?
Even the best operator will perform poorly on a gate with bad hinges, incorrect geometry, excessive drag, weak posts or no proper open-and-close stops. The gate should move freely and be structurally sound before automation is installed.
✅ If it’s solar, what size panel and battery are included?
Ask for the solar-panel wattage, battery size and charging equipment. An undersized solar system may work initially but leave you with constant low-battery problems later.
✅ How will the wiring be protected?
Wiring should be properly sized, protected in conduit where needed and connected using weather-resistant methods. Exposed wire, household wire nuts and unsealed splices are major red flags.
✅ What access-control equipment is included?
Confirm the exact keypad, remotes, vehicle sensors, cellular entry system or exit devices included in the price—and whether programming and setup are included.
✅ What warranties are provided?
Ask for separate written warranties covering:
• The operator and manufacturer’s parts
• Accessories
• Installation labor
• Gate fabrication and workmanship
Also ask who handles the warranty claim if something fails.
🚩 WATCH FOR THESE RED FLAGS:
• A bid that only says “install gate opener”
• No operator brand or model listed
• No safety devices included
• No explanation of battery or solar capacity
• Unprotected or exposed wiring
• Installing an operator on a dragging or poorly built gate
• No written warranty
• A price that is dramatically lower without explaining why
The cheapest installation can quickly become the most expensive once you start paying someone else to correct it.
At The Gate Guy, we believe customers deserve a detailed proposal explaining the equipment, installation method, safety devices and warranties they are actually purchasing. Compare the complete system—not just the final number.
