Yesterday’s outage across Teller, Park, and Fremont counties left thousands without power due to an interruption involving a third-party transmission line. Events like this are an important reminder that even when weather conditions near your home appear normal, larger grid or transmission issues can still leave entire communities without electricity.

Having a backup generator can help keep your home safe, comfortable, and operational during unexpected outages. However, not all backup generator systems are the same, and choosing the right setup depends on your home, budget, and overall power needs.

Portable generators are a cost-effective solution for powering circuits during an outage. These systems are manually operated, meaning the homeowner starts the generator, connects it to the home through a code-compliant generator inlet, and manually transfers circuits from utility power to generator power using an approved transfer switch or interlock. When professionally installed, portable generators can safely and effectively provide backup power to your home during an outage.

Whole-home standby generators offer a more comprehensive solution. These permanently installed systems are connected directly to the home’s electrical system and automatically detect utility power loss during an outage. When an outage occurs, the generator starts automatically and transfers the home from utility power to generator power through an automatic transfer switch. Once utility power is restored, the system safely transfers the home back to utility power before shutting itself down automatically. These systems provide added convenience and peace of mind during severe weather events or extended outages.

Pictured here is a liquid-cooled 30kW standby generator we installed for a customer with a 200-amp electrical service. This fully automatic system is designed to provide seamless backup power during utility outages while safely managing the transition between generator and utility power.

No matter which generator option you choose, the connection to your electrical system must be installed properly and in compliance with current electrical code requirements. A code-compliant generator inlet, used in conjunction with an approved transfer switch or interlock system, helps prevent dangerous backfeeding, protects utility workers and your home, and ensures a safer and more reliable transfer of power during outages. Improper generator connections, such as backfeeding through dryer outlets or other unauthorized wiring methods, are extremely dangerous and illegal in many areas.

Whether you are considering a portable generator hookup, transfer switch installation, interlock kit, or a complete whole-home standby generator system, we are happy to help you find the right solution for your home or business.

Ran power underground from a townhome to a shed this week in the heart of Woodland Park. We also wired the inside, tailoring the layout to fit the client’s needs. This shed will soon become a fully finished workshop dedicated to her hobby. Always grateful for the opportunity to help bring these projects to life.

With summer just around the corner, we’re seeing a noticeable increase in AC installation requests as homeowners prepare for warmer temperatures. Even in mountain communities, where rising seasonal temperatures are becoming more common, more homeowners are choosing to install central air for added comfort.

Beyond cooling, central air systems can also help improve indoor air quality, an important consideration during fire season by reducing smoke intrusion. For individuals with respiratory concerns, this added filtration can make a meaningful difference.

Every installation we complete is tailored to the home. Our process includes a careful assessment to determine the most cost-effective and visually clean way to run power from the source to your new AC unit. We take pride in delivering solutions that are efficient, durable, and seamlessly integrated into your home.

Here’s a look at one of this week’s installations!

This week, we responded to an emergency service call from a wonderful homeowner in Woodland Park who was experiencing no water, no heat, and low voltage throughout the home.

After diagnosing the issue, we discovered that a fencing contractor had previously damaged an underground wire during a post relocation and attempted a temporary fix using electrical tape—leaving the line vulnerable to failure over time.

Once identified, we coordinated with Alpine Locates to accurately pinpoint the fault. As luck would have it, our friends over at Peak DirtWorks were working right across the street and were able to pop over and lend a hand. Their team carefully excavated a 4’ x 4’ trench, taking every precaution to avoid damage to surrounding underground utilities.

We located the damaged section, replaced three 3-foot segments of wire, and completed the repair using a UL-listed underground splice kit.

Thanks to the quick response and teamwork of our trusted partners, power was safely restored and the homeowner was back up and running in no time.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to help our community when it matters most.

Completed a service upgrade and panel replacement for a home in Florissant / Park County this week.

This property had an outdated Federal Pacific panel that needed to be removed and upgraded. These panels are well known in the industry for breaker failure issues—meaning they may not trip properly under overload conditions—creating a significant fire risk. Because of this, many insurance providers will not cover homes with these panels in place.

This project came with several challenges due to code and utility requirements, as well as the existing service layout. With the existing layout, the original service location was no longer a viable option. The mast height could not exceed utility limits, which required relocating the service further along the exterior wall to achieve proper height of the overhead service wire coming in.

At the same time, the original panel location had to remain accessible to accommodate existing circuits. To solve this, we installed a new main service in a compliant location and added a sub panel to efficiently tie everything back together.

This project was completed with a clean and code-compliant solution.

Thank you, Teller County, for trusting us to work on your properties!

This week we completed a full electrical remodel in the heights of Cripple Creek, transforming an older cabin into a safe, code-compliant space.

This project included a full service upgrade with a new panel installation, as well as designing and implementing a baseboard heating system. We removed outdated wiring, installed exterior lighting, and created custom interior lighting tailored to the client’s vision. Smoke detectors were also added to enhance overall safety throughout the home.

One of the most critical aspects of this remodel was correcting hazardous ‘flying’ splices and locating buried junction boxes. Flying splices—where wires are connected outside of a secured junction box—are a serious fire risk. Without proper containment, these connections are exposed to heat buildup, arcing, and physical damage, all of which can lead to electrical fires. By properly enclosing and securing these connections, we ensured the system is not only functional, but safe and up to code.

Projects like this are a great reminder that what’s behind the walls matters just as much as what you see. Whether you’re planning a simple upgrade or a full remodel, we’re here to make sure it’s done right—and done safely.

Properly sizing your electrical service to match your equipment needs is essential. In this case, the customer was experiencing frequent main breaker trips due to an unpermitted hot tub installation. To safely handle the additional load, we upgraded the service from 100 AMP to 150 AMP, ensuring reliable and efficient operation.
