The Proper Tip #9:

Don’t Ignore Loose Hardware

Everyday use can loosen your garage door’s nuts, bolts, hinges, and brackets. A quick visual check can help catch small issues before they become bigger repairs.

⚠️ Never adjust springs, cables, or bottom brackets—leave those to a professional.

THE PROPER TIP #8:

Emergency Cord Usage

That red emergency release can be helpful—but pulling it while your garage door is open can be dangerous.

If a spring is broken or the door is unbalanced, disconnecting the opener could cause the door to come down unexpectedly.

⚠️ If something doesn’t look right, don’t take the risk. Call a professional.

THE PROPER TIP #7:

CHECK YOUR CABLES

Garage door cables do a lot of heavy lifting—and a damaged cable can fail without warning.

👀 Take a quick look for fraying, rust, loose strands, or kinks. If something doesn’t look right, don’t touch or adjust it yourself. Garage door cables are under extreme tension and should be handled by a professional.

A quick visual check today could help prevent a bigger problem tomorrow.

When was the last time you checked your garage door cables?

The Proper Tip #6:

Check Your Garage Door Batteries

Don’t wait until you’re locked out during a power outage.

A few minutes of maintenance can save a lot of frustration.

✅ Replace remote batteries every 1–2 years.
✅ Replace wireless keypad batteries every 1–2 years.
✅ If your opener has a battery backup, unplug the opener from the outlet and test it monthly. If the door opens, your backup battery is ready. If not, it may be time for a replacement.

Would your garage door still work if the power went out today?

The Proper Tip #5:

Lubricate the Right Way

A few minutes of maintenance can add years to the life of your garage door.

Remember to lubricate your rollers, hinges, bearings, springs, & very lightly on the opener chain—but never the tracks. Lubricating the tracks attracts dirt & debris, which can lead to poor performance & unnecessary wear.

The Proper Tip #4

Test Your Garage Door Balance

Why it matters:
A garage door that’s out of balance puts extra strain on your opener, wears out parts faster, & can lead to expensive repairs.

Quick Homeowner Test:

1. Close the garage door.
2. Pull the emergency release cord.
3. Lift the door halfway by hand.
4. Let go very carefully but keeping the ability to grab the door quickly.

What should happen?
✅ The door should stay in place.

❌ If it falls or shoots upward, the door is out of balance and should be professionally adjusted.

Safety Reminder:
Never attempt to adjust torsion springs yourself. They’re under extreme tension & can cause serious injury.

The Proper Tip #3

Most garage door problems aren’t major… sometimes they’re just dirty safety eyes.

Dust, cobwebs, and debris can prevent your safety sensors from working properly. It only takes a few seconds to wipe both lenses clean and make sure they’re facing each other.

It’s a simple habit that helps keep your garage door operating safely.

THE PROPER TIP #2

Don’t Forget Your Safety Eyes

Your garage door’s safety eyes help prevent the door from closing if something—or someone—is in its path.

💡 The Proper Tip: Before closing your garage door, briefly place an object in front of one safety eye. If the beam is blocked, the door should not close.

If it does, it’s time to have your system inspected.
