If you've never experienced a hurricane in a coastal community, you probably don't have a frame of reference for what you're choosing to drive into. That's not an insult.
If you're staying on the 10th, 15th or 20th floor of a beachfront condo, you're also not riding this out like you would in a one- or two-story home.
High-rises are engineered for wind, but that doesn't make hurricane-force winds comfortable. There can be tremendous wind noise, pressure changes, rattling and noticeable movement. If you've never experienced it, it can be extremely unnerving.
And when the wind stops, ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐จ๐๐ฌ๐ง'๐ญ ๐ฆ๐๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ ๐ข๐ง.
Power will be out. Cell service will be unreliable. Restaurants and grocery stores will be closed. Traffic lights will not work. Roads will be flooded or blocked by trees, power lines and debris.

After a hurricane, this little beach town sounds completely different.
Generators. Everywhere. Chainsaws. Ambulances and fire trucks.
Utility trucks and heavy equipment. That constant hum of generators becomes the background noise of neighborhoods without electricity.
And it looks different, too.
You may see huge piles of storm debris lining the roadsโtrees, lumber, roofing, pieces of docks and piers, furniture and boats sitting where boats absolutely do not belong.

And remember: when you voluntarily enter an area expecting hurricane conditions, you aren't only accepting risk for yourself. You're adding people and vehicles to a community whose police, fire, EMS, utility and public-works crews may already be stretched thin.

Immediately after a hurricane, beaches can be covered in debris. Dunes and walkovers may be damaged. There can be hazards in the sand and water that you cannot see.
