I’ve come to the same conclusion, but specifically when dealing with third-party service providers (NSPs).

I recently switched my scheduling app to Jobber, and when I’m doing a quote, it’s easy to ask for a payment method up front. That gives me some peace of mind that I’ll actually get paid for the work.

I’ll probably do the same with larger jobs, even if they don’t necessarily require a deposit. It’s better to have a card on file than to chase payment afterward.

Sunday Emergency Call

Today I got a rare Sunday emergency call for car keys. A customer had his keys stolen in Minneapolis. 🙈🙉🙊

He needed a new key for his 2015 Subaru Outback, which uses a traditional keyed ignition rather than a proximity/push-button system.

I purchased the key code from Subaru, cut and fitted the new key, and then used my Smart Pro Lite to program it to the vehicle.

As always with lost or stolen vehicle keys, the customer provided proof of ownership and photo ID before I got started.

Another customer back on the road!

Another Commercial Rekey Completed!

Yesterday I helped out a local tax and accounting firm, in Lake Elmo, with a couple of their doors. The front and back doors needed to be rekeyed, and one of the doors also needed a hinge adjustment so it would close and latch properly.

A pretty straightforward job, but taking care of those little issues helps keep a business secure and its doors working the way they should.

Another happy customer and another job checked off the list! 🔐

A little walk down memory lane today…

I received a call today from a customer who had lost the keys to his 2000 Toyota RAV4. As we talked, I learned that he’s a faculty member at Cretin-Derham Hall High School.

My high school.

I graduated from CDH in 1990. My customer has been teaching there for the past 20 years, and somehow our paths never crossed. I guess that’s what happens when you start realizing just how long ago 1990 really was. 😂

The good news is that I was able to get him back on the road pretty quickly. The even better news? A 2000 RAV4 is a bit of a walk into the past itself. No immobilizer, no transponder chip, no programming—just a good old-fashioned key.

There was something pretty cool about making a key for a teacher at the school where I spent my high school years… 36 years after I graduated.

Today’s job was more than just making a car key. It was a little reminder of where I came from, how much time has passed, and how life has a funny way of bringing you back around.

Having all the good feels today. ❤️🔑

Things that you just don't expect to find: A locksmith called me today and said he found 4 Unit Locksets being used in a residential home. I asked him, "What kind of fancy house are you working on?" These locks are $1600 each. Turns out that it was once a doctor's office. I sent him a link to a video I found showing how to take them apart to rekey: https://youtu.be/78QTmyz06Go?si=Kwf0k6yUsng-5KDQ

This last week was a little bittersweet here in the All Saints family.

As of Thursday, all of our kids have officially moved out of the house. They’re off to college and starting to build lives of their own. Mrs. All Saints is somehow managing to be incredibly proud and incredibly sad at the exact same time. ❤️

And then there’s the Suburban.

That truck was my work vehicle during the first several years of All Saints Lock & Key, but long before that, it was our family truckster, grocery getter, kid hauler, and general do-everything vehicle.

After all these years, it finally found a new home.

It feels like a lot of things are changing all at once. The kids are moving on, the old truck is moving on, and apparently I’m supposed to move on too.

It’s a whole new world of moving on… and I’m not sure I’m completely ready for it yet.

Proud? Absolutely.
Excited? Definitely.
A little sentimental? Yeah… probably more than I’d like to admit.
