January is the National Radon Action month!
❔What is radon, and what’s the fuss about?
☣️ Radon is the byproduct of uranium and radium breaking down in the ground. Radon itself breaks down into what we call Radon Decay Products. These products are what cause lung damage and cancer, and is dangerous to humans and animals when they are exposed to it. The issue is that radon and it’s by-products then seep into your home from the ground by air-movement (picture how smoke moves and seeps through cracks and gaps with the flow of air).
By mitigating a home, (directing the flow of air and radon away and out of the home), we aim to lessen your exposure to these products. You can’t see, smell, or touch these products, so it is important to test your home and know what levels you are exposed to on a daily basis. The higher your levels, the higher your exposure is. Geographically, some areas have lower levels and the risk isn’t that high. However, Colorado is one of the biggest hot-spots in the US for radon levels, and that is why it shouldn’t be taken lightly. This is also why places, like Fort Collins, have implemented new laws requiring testing and mitigation on new homes, and when selling homes.
Like Toby from The Office said… “Radon is the silent killer.”
