Here’s a good example of one of those small roofing details that can make a BIG difference.
When a headwall terminates at a roof slope, step flashing helps direct water back onto the roof and into the gutter. But at the bottom of that wall, there also needs to be a kick-out diverter to actually “kick” that water away from the siding.
The before photo shows what can happen when that detail is missing. Instead of being directed into the gutter, water repeatedly runs down the side of the home. Over time, that can lead to damaged siding, sheathing, rot, and potentially water getting into the home. You won’t know until your drywall begins to show signs of water damage, but by then, it’s too late.
The after photo shows what it should look like. Proper step flashing terminating into a kick-out diverter that sends the water where it belongs.
It’s a small piece of flashing, but there’s a reason it’s required by building code.
