Even the Most Expensive System Can’t Survive Bad Installation
The Rheem Prestige series is a top-tier, inverter-driven, high-efficiency central HVAC system rated at SEER 20. But just five years after installation, the air handler—located in the attic—was in critical condition: corrosion, moisture buildup, system errors, and constant alerts from the smart thermostat.
The homeowner had previously called another AC company. They replaced the thermistor, but:
• Installed a non-original sensor,
• Mounted it incorrectly,
• Failed to identify other obvious issues like plenum defects and a missing P-trap,
• And most importantly — they didn’t fix the problem. The system continued to run with excessive humidity and persistent error codes.
What we found:
• The supply and return plenums were pieced together from scraps with multiple gaps, pulling in warm attic air and creating continuous condensation inside the unit.
• The drain line had no P-trap, leading to improper water drainage and moisture buildup.
What we did:
• Installed the correct OEM thermistor — and the error disappeared.
• Fully replaced the supply plenum and rebuilt and sealed the return plenum.
• Installed a proper drain line with a P-trap.
• Dried the unit and replaced all internal insulation.
Now the system runs like new — quiet, stable, and efficient, just as it should.
The bottom line: even premium equipment won’t last without quality installation. Professional workmanship is what truly makes a system reliable.
