A robotics integrator commissioning a production line needs remote access to the manufacturing ex*****on system, so an account gets created with broad rights and a password that does not expire. Unlike the commissioning project, the account does not have an end date, and it keeps authenticating long after the integrator's last site visit. Accounts like that are the infrastructure AI runs on, and they are easy to overlook while adoption accelerates. Every AI assistant or machine learning model requires access to enterprise data, production systems, engineering repositories and operational technology. Each new connection creates identities, permissions and machine credentials that someone has to govern.

Product lifecycle management systems could play a central role in manufacturers’ adoption of AI agents, according to new research commissioned by Propel Software. The survey of 400 senior manufacturing professionals found that 49% ranked PLM as the top business system for AI agents to access through Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that enables AI applications to connect with external data sources and systems. In addition, 89% of respondents said a connected product data foundation is essential to realizing AI’s potential. Sixty-six percent said AI would be completely or mostly ineffective in their organizations without access to product information such as requirements, bills of materials and change histories. The survey included professionals in the high-tech and electronics, industrial equipment and medical device industries. More than 90% of respondents said their organizations have implemented MCP or expect to do so within the next 12 months.

The pace of technological advancement and the evolution of hacker behaviors makes recording episodes of this podcast well in advance a bit or a risk. There’s always the worry that whatever we discuss could become less relevant by the time it goes live. Today’s episode, however, bucks that trend. The number of AI programs that have made headlines recently for busting out of their developmental sandboxes has generated some justified scrutiny of AI-based security solutions.

Headlines and hacker claims are not excuses for failing to leverage the cybersecurity benefits of AI.
