MASTER BATHROOM REMODEL
Your master bathroom is your sanctuary from the world. If you feel that your master bathroom is lacking, the following remodeling ideas will help you turn it into a more pleasant and functional environment. Regardless of personal style, all bathrooms will benefit from these important features.
DOUBLE SINK VANITY:
A double sink vanity installation allows for separate space for each person. A small seating area between the two sinks allows for leisurely application of makeup, styling of hair, or other personal rituals.
BATHROOM COUNTER-TOPS: Bathroom counter-top materials combine beauty and brawn in equal measure.
GRANITE remains the premier choice among the varieties of natural stone, due to its dramatic beauty and seemingly endless variety of colors and patterns.
QUARTZ is tougher than granite and doesn’t require sealing. It’s naturally resistant to moisture, stains and bacteria. Quartz can rival high-end granite and marble in cost.
SOLID-SURFACE MATERIALS are made of acrylic resin and crushed stone.
Extremely durable and naturally resistant to water, bacteria and stains.
Realistic flecked or streaked styles can rival natural stone, and virtually seamless.
CUSTOMIZED STORAGE: Nothing detracts from the beauty of a bathroom like clutter. Install customized storage cabinets in your master bath to help ensure that there is plenty of storage space. If your bathroom is somewhat small, talk to your contractor about getting narrow custom-built storage cabinets that will fit in your bathroom’s smaller spaces.
SMART LIGHTING: The best bathroom designs have many light sources for different purposes. Use a combination of recessed lights, pendant lights, vanity lights and natural light to keep your bathroom well lit.
WATER-RESISTANT MATERIALS: Be sure to select slip-resistant materials when designing the shower and floor. Choose hard, non-absorbent flooring materials. Traditional selections include porcelain or ceramic tile or vinyl.
ADEQUATE VENTILATION: Your bathroom ventilation performs the critical function of shuttling damp air from the room in addition to removing unpleasant odors. Failing to adequately vent a bathroom can lead to mold and mildew buildup – potential source for structural damage to your home.
ELECTRICAL WIRING: The 15-amp wiring in your prewar house's bathroom has likely been abused by years of high-power hair drying. So don't just swap in GFCI outlets. Replace the wiring too, with a dedicated 20-amp circuit and plenty of outlets for all the appliances you use, from electric razors and toothbrushes to hair-straightening irons.
WALK-IN SHOWER VS. TUB-SHOWER: ON GOING DEBATE
My choice would be a big walk-in tiled shower without glass doors with several different shower heads. Installing a door-less shower is not a do-it-yourself project.
EXTRA TOWEL BARS: You can never have too many towel bars.
