Lee County Organizing Committee

Lee County Organizing Committee The UWUA has been around since 1940, representing workers in the electrical power, gas, water fields both private and public sector.

After careful consideration of the events leading up the the establishment of this organizing committee, The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO were contacted for their help and expertise in organizing our local union. They are 50,000 members strong across the country. The UWUA have been known as “fighters” for the rights to organize and for representation of union members. Each local union

is a union of themselves. All officers, all contracts or anything else that affects us at work, we move by majority vote. The National union will be there for training of officers, help in contract negotiations, and for expertise in protecting worker rights. Their history is long and impressive. Please, go check them out at www.uwua.net.

We Did it!

It's official, County Commission has approved a 3% across the board pay raise due to the help of your co workers.

Your co workers along with friends and families in the County, local unions and their families here in Southwest Florida, local unions and their families in Lee County, the State and National AFL-CIO and the Utility Workers members around the country deserve a big thank you.

For those co workers that would not sign the petition out of fear, you should look upon your co workers with respect and appreciation in helping you receive this pay raise. Take notice that your co workers did not suffer reprisal from management for doing the right thing. Speaking in one large and loud voice has protections, First amendment protections. Speaking in a unified voice with support from other workers, union members, families, friends and supporters from around the United States brings pressure upon those holding the “purse strings”. It's the American way. Remember, we live in a democracy and we should work in a democracy. This is what a local union provides...a voice in support of each worker. Protections for workers when they have been wronged by the actions of management. A chance to bargain for anything that falls under worker pay, benefits, and working conditions. A way to equalize the power that management has over the worker without fear of reprisal, intimidation, and retribution.

County management will probably go out of their way to use this pay raise to show us how well they look out for our interests when in fact they have been shamed into this. They will take credit for how well they regard our sacrifices and how good they are treating us for all our hard work. Don't be fooled by their empty lies. Remember how benevolent they were just a few years ago when layoffs were doled out, The furlough program, the 6 years without any pay increase while our state government took 3% away from us for our very healthy pension program because private sector employees contribute to theirs. The past 2 across the board pay raises are only a way to try to buy you out of thinking of becoming union...nothing more. In this coming budget, the county will take the $20 million of extra money they have and move it into the reserve fund bringing that fund to $110 million. Why? Why couldn't the county use a portion of this to reinstate our merit pay increases and other lost benefits they took away from us? If management really cared for us, this would have been restored for us once the county entered into the black. Truth is the funds to help us during these lean times were always there. Remember the 2.5 billion dollars they have invested in Bank of America accounts? What happened to all that interest? Face it, without pressure, these miniscule 3% across the board raises will be all we will ever see...their “new normal”. Let this pay increase which all of you who participated brought to all county employees be the beginning of a better day for county employees. Let this news show that together we can win back what we lost and earn the respect of management.

So you think the Labor Movement is dying in the South? Think again!

We have a new development regarding the electrical training of Lee County plant operators. We learned today that the County is backing down from the electrical training we mentioned earlier. As of now the training will only be on what operators can do in situations that develop without having to go into control panels, wiring, and components. They allude to the previous revelation as being a "misunderstanding". Perhaps it is a misunderstanding or perhaps not, at least the operators will not be exposed to possible serious injury or death. For this we are all grateful. Being "at will" doesn't mean they couldn't change their minds on this at any time. To ensure that this doesn't happen in the near future, we need to bind together to be strong. Bind together for our health and safety. Bind together as a local union.

Water/Waste Water Plant Operators to become Electricians?

We learned today that Lee County Utilities is planning to give a crash course to all plant operators on how to troubleshoot electrical problems at their plants as well as do “simple” electrical repair work. The thinking is that by having an operator taking care of the simple problems, on-call electrical personnel will not be needed to be called out thus saving the County the overtime they would otherwise incur. On larger problems where the plant is down, operators will have to diagnose the exact problem to fill in the on call electrician when they arrive at the plant to save time. Apparently the Utilities' safety officer will be organizing these training sessions. This seems to be a contradiction having the safety officer, whose goal is for the overall safety of Utilities employees involved in something that could pose a definite risk of injury or death to the operations employee. This Safety Officer should be fighting to keep this from happening!

In your personal life...would you hire somebody who only had a training class with no experience, no certification, and little training to work on the electrical system in your house? Of course not! Why would the county risk life and limb of one of their employees on such a hare-brained idea? Why would the county risk lawsuits from employees' families after they lose their loved one's ability to provide for them due to serious injury or death? From what we see, lower management is against this idea as well, for the very same reasons. County electricians with years of experience and training risk the possibility of injury on a daily basis. All it takes is an unknown situation, opening an electrical cabinet with an arc flash, a moment of loosing concentration and it's all over! Even trained electricians have been injured due to no fault of their own. The County seems to think that operations staff will do whatever they are required to do to keep their jobs...even at the risk described above, and for what? Will they be compensated to assume this risk? You know the answer.

Folks, it goes back to what we have been saying for a long time. The County does not care about you. If you will not do their bidding they will just as soon replace you with another “desperate” soul who will. Being that we are “at will”, we cannot stop a crazy scheme like this. If we organize we can stop it dead in it's tracks. Status Quo will prevent any changes to working conditions. A contract would go even further. We need to act now. Act now before we loose co workers from unnecessary risk and the injuries that will surely arise. Contact us. Let's get moving before someone gets hurt!

It has come to our attention that a co worker or perhaps a group of co workers have taken the initiative to start a petition to take to the Lee County Commission to explain that we all need and deserve a raise for the next budget year. On behalf of the organizing committee we thank these workers and wholly endorse their effort. Please help their effort by clicking on the link, http://chn.ge/1jD5r2C. Comment: This how the County retaliates against employees that do their duty by cooperating with the Clerk of Court in an investigation of wrongdoing within the County. The fear and prospect of retaliation is what drives many of us against the one thing that can prevent this from happening to any of us in the future...ORGANIZING into one powerful voice!
