Ground cover for peanuts! Perennial Peanut is very hearty; requiring less water, fertilization and being more pest resistant than many other options. The more sun it receives, the more yellow flowers that it typically produces. This is a great option for low maintenance beds that can establish quickly and affordably.

Yellowing in St. Augustine grass is more common than you might think this time of year. Patches and streaks of yellow turf slowly spreading throughout your lawn can be the caused by many different pests.
Insects, diseases, and micronutrient deficiencies could all be culprits although more than likely its only just one of these. To diagnose the problem you should start by ruling out some of the possibilities. Perform a soap test in order to search for chinch bugs and webworm caterpillars. You may also want to do a little digging, usually only 2 inches, to check for grubs.
Diseases such as TARR (take-all root rot), are a big problem. You can identify this using a hand lens or dissecting scope and looking at the stolons where the yellow shoots attach. If TARR is a problem you will notice black, puzzle piece shaped hyphopodia what is known as Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis.
Best case scenario your lawn is just experiencing a micronutrient deficiency. Iron deficiency is common and can be corrected by fertilizing properly. Fertilizing throughout the year can help prevent yellowing and ensure your grass has all the proper nutrients to thrive in southwest Florida.

TOP PALM TREE CARE MISTAKES

1. WATERING (OVER/UNDER). Providing your palm trees with enough water is essential to healthy growth. Most palms prefer moist soil that has the ability to drain well. Soil that doesn’t drain well can cause your palm tree leaves to turn brown or yellow and fall off quickly without first drying out. Checking the soil moist level should help you to better understand how to water your palm.

2. FERTILIZING (OVER/UNDER). Palm trees need nutrients for a healthy growth. During warm months you should fertilize for a total of 4 to 5 times a year. Be careful to not over fertilize your palms. This can burn your palm tree and make it more susceptible to diseases. When planting a new palm tree you shouldn't add fertilizer to the soil. Palm tree roots are fragile and adding fertilizing so close to the root ball can easily damage and perhaps kill your palm tree. A good practice is to not fertilize your palm tree for at least 3-4 months after planting.

3. PRUNING. Palm trees need dying leaves for nutrients. WHAT? It’s true, they move nutrients from dying leaves to new growth and even protect new growing fonds from wind damage. Dying leaves should be removed when they are as close to the trunk as possible.

4. INCORRECT SOIL. Good soil allows the palm tree root system to develop properly. Keeping the soil moist and providing good drainage is the best way to ensure healthy growth. The best soil is the kind that can retain moisture bus also provide good drainage.

5. WRONG CLIMATE. Choosing the right climate for the type of palm trees you plant is crucial to its healthy development. You should only purchase palm trees after you been sure that the type you are getting can grow in your climate zone.

What’s helping your Lawn?

While they won’t win beauty contests, Ground Beetles will help your lawn thrive. These insect feed on many lawn, vegetable, and field crop pests including armyworms, cutworms, mole crickets and others. Adults and larvae are predatory and hide in mulch, leaf litter, and other debris. Ground Beetles are not considered pests as the predominantly feed on other insects. Next time you see a ground beetle in your lawn, don’t smush it! It is fighting for your lawn, not against it.

The 1 secret to save money, time and stress while taking care of your lawn. Most folks haven’t figured the cost of doing their lawn; let’s start there 1) Conservatively, $380 for a mower with mower maintenance at about 10% of the purchase price per year. If the average homeowner mower survives 144 cuts, that mower cost per cut is $3.43 per mow. Weed-eater, hedge trimmer and edger are $100 each for basic homeowner models. Over 144 cuts, with maintenance, this equals $2.70 per cut. Gas and oil equal about $2.00 per cut. We are up to $10.86 per mow. Do you value your time? What is your time worth? Let’s assume that you think your time is worth minimum wage at least- $7.93 per hour in Florida. If you can mow, edge, cut, trim and clean-up in one hour, the total cost is now $18.79 per mow, or $81.42 per month. This does not include accidental breakage of your equipment, the costs of clothing/shoes damage, blades/sharpening or many other considerations. At NewLeaf Grounds, 95% of properties that we quote are only $75 a month for mowing, edging, blowing and trimming. By using our lawn service, you can save $6.42 a month and spend your time doing something important to you like spending time with family, boating or playing golf!

What’s eating your lawn?

Mole Crickets are common turf grass pests. Mostly found in Bahia grass and Bermuda grass they cause the most damage form late August to early October by making tunnels in the ground and severing the grass roots. They also eat the roots and shoots of grass which causes thinning and brown patches. Raccoons and Armadillos may further damage your lawn by digging up the turf in search for theses insects to feed on. You can perform the soap test to find out if these pests are a problem in your lawn. Pesticides can be used to control the pests but recent studies show that biologically controlling them is more effective and less expensive.

Top 3 Keys to a professional quality cut:

1. Know your turf: Different grass types have different properties, that effect how they should be cut, watered and otherwise maintained. To properly cut your lawn, first learn your grass and the recommended cutting procedures.
2. Know your equipment: Equipment has functions that are far ranging, including anti-scalping protection, discharge options, mulching ability and more. The quality of the mower construction and the engine power will directly affect its ability to provide a smooth even cut. Keep your equipment clean.
3. Use the right Blade: Depending on the turf type, conditions and discharge, different blades should be used and at different heights. Hi-lift, Low-Lift, mulching and virtually and endless variety of other blades. Also ensure your blades are sharp, straight and balanced. At NewLeaf Grounds for example, we sharpen and balance the blades on our commercial mowers daily.
