🔌⚡😎 Over 600,000 ONCOR customers lost power — some for nearly a week — beginning on May 28, when a gnarly storm blew through Dallas and downed a significant number of trees and power lines. It was the second-worst outage in ONCOR’s 112-year history, a spokesperson told the Observer. But for many long-time Texans, the delayed power restoration was a lot more of the same old.

We’re seeing it now, in Houston, where 35,000 CenterPoint customers remained without power more than a week after Hurricane Beryl blew through town, cutting off the lights for nearly three million households. And we saw it in 2021, when an estimated 70% of ERCOT customers lost electricity for days thanks to an unusually powerful winter storm.

Climate Central, a nonprofit research group that studies climate change and its impacts, recently determined that when it comes to states managing to keep the lights on during extreme weather events, Texas comes in dead last.

🔌⚡😎 Texas experienced more power outages than any other state over the past 20 years

Over the past 20 years, Texas experienced more power outages than any other U.S. state, according to a recent study by environmental advocacy group Climate Central.

What's more, the report's authors warn that blackouts are likely to become more common nationwide as climate change drives an increase in extreme weather events.

The report hits with Texas still reckoning with the causes and effects of 2020's catastrophic Winter Storm Uri. During that disaster — one of the costliest in state history — Texas' power grid collapsed, plunging millions into darkness and leaving hundreds dead.

Although the Republican-led Texas legislature enacted reforms in the wake of Uri, many critics argue they didn't go far enough or acknowledge the effects of climate change. Many consumers rode out heat waves this summer amid worries the overtaxed grid would flatline again.

Of the 1,542 weather-related outages documented in the U.S. over the study's 20-year analysis, 180 were in Texas. Michigan ranked second with 132 and California third with 129.

Of all major power outages nationally, the study attributed 83% to weather-related events such as winter storms, tropical cyclones and other extremes. Climate change is making all of those weather conditions more common, the report notes.

U.S. residents experienced 64% more major power outages between 2011 and 2021 than during the previous decade, according to Climate Central. During the most recent decade, the average annual number of power outages specifically related to weather events also shot up by 78%.

"As extreme weather events become more common and electrical infrastructure continues to age, the number of outages is only likely to increase," the group said in its report.

🚨APRIL 2023 - G7 agrees to accelerate phase-out of unabated fossil fuels.
The G7 decided to endorse a goal to "drastically increase electricity generated by renewable energies," a person with knowledge of the discussions separately told Reuters, asking not to be identified because the information is not public.

Ministers also appeared to be considering numerical targets for increasing solar power capacity to at least 1 terawatt and offshore wind power capacity to 150 gigawatts by 2030, the source said.

🔌⚡😎 290,000 Oncor customers lost power in Thursday night's storms. As of 6 a.m. Friday, about 67,000 people were still without power in North Texas.

The outages Friday morning were scattered across the North Texas area, though about 24,000 were in the Tarrant County area, and around 15,000 were in the Dallas area.

At one point Thursday night, two water pumping stations in Richardson lost power, causing the city to ask residents to stop using water. Oncor had an emergency response and was able to restore power to the pumping stations by around 10 p.m.

Texans could experience calls to reduce electricity usage — or even power outages — this winter if the grid experiences very high demand for power, estimates from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas show.

Ahead of each season, ERCOT, which operates the state power grid, estimates how much power supply will be available to meet projected needs — serving as an early indicator of risk. The winter report published Tuesday shows that very high demand during winter weather could force ERCOT to ask Texans to cut back on electricity usage to avoid an emergency.
