Landmark Structures

Landmark Structures Founded in 1974 in Canada, and in 1985 in the U.S. We have now added spheroid elevated tanks for lower capacity applications.

As a specialty engineering and contracting company, Landmark is recognized as an industry leader in the design, construction, and maintenance of storage tanks for the industrial, military, and municipal sectors. as a specialty engineering and contracting company, Landmark works throughout North America, with principal offices in Dallas/Fort Worth, Toronto, and Chicago. We are committed to growth t

hrough leveraging our core competencies in planning, engineering and construction excellence, cooperative project execution, and client service with expansion into new markets involving water, energy and the environment. Landmark Structures transformed water storage with the introduction of the composite elevated tank, combining a reinforced concrete pedestal and welded steel tank. In a span of less than 20 years, this development propelled us from innovator to market leader, with the composite elevated tank rising to become the established industry standard for large capacity storage of up to 3.5 million gallons.

A concrete pedestal that looks uniform from top to bottom didn't happen by accident. It happened because three variables were controlled before the first truck arrived on site.

Landmark pours a test panel before pedestal construction begins - a full-scale reference that validates the combined effects of mix design, placement procedures, and form system under real conditions. That panel becomes the quality standard for the entire project.

Here's what drives consistency in architectural concrete:

▪️ Single-source materials. One type, brand, and source of cement. One source of aggregate. Different sources produce different colors, and color variation on a 200-foot pedestal is visible from a distance.
▪️ Controlled placement rate. A fast, consistent pour rate avoids differential set times within a single lift, which is what causes visible lines and shade differences between sections.
▪️ Form system designed for dual purpose. The system must cast both structural and architectural concrete simultaneously, delivering strength and finish in the same pour.

Predictable results come from repeatable process, not favorable conditions.

What does hurricane preparedness look like for a coastal city that sits directly on the Gulf of Mexico?

Calvin Matthews, Director of Water Utilities for the City of Port Arthur, knows what that means better than most. Port Arthur sits directly on the Gulf. When a storm makes landfall, they face the brunt of it: surge waters, high winds and rain.

Their 2.5 MG Composite Elevated Tank isn't just their largest tank. It's their emergency operations facility, engineered with dual overhead doors and an open first floor designed to withstand over 12 feet of storm surge.

We sat down with Calvin to hear how his team uses it when it matters most.

Fort Erie’s next generation of water infrastructure is now in place.

Last month, a new nine-million-litre Composite Elevated Tank (CET) was installed on Pettit Road - an important milestone for Niagara Region and the Town of Fort Erie.

Once commissioned, the new tank will combine and replace Fort Erie’s aging water-storage systems. The project will improve pumping operations, simplify and optimize the system through consolidation, reduce long-term lifecycle costs, and provide the capacity needed to support projected growth.

Landmark is proud to help deliver infrastructure that supports dependable water service today while preparing communities for tomorrow. Thank you to Niagara Region, the Town of Fort Erie, and all project partners and field crews whose coordination made this installation a success.

Watch the video to see this CET take shape.

Building a 219-foot elevated tank is one thing. Building it inside a federal facility with es**rt requirements for every person and vehicle on site is another.

The 750,000-gallon Composite Elevated Tank (CET) at NASA's Johnson Space Center required project management that went far beyond typical construction logistics:

▪️ Strict security protocols governing all site access: crews, subcontractors, and supply trucks es**rted at all times

▪️ Scheduling built around restricted access windows, not just weather and material lead times

▪️ Coordination across multiple stakeholders operating under federal requirements

Delivered on time, in an environment where a single missed clearance could shut down a day's work.

Not every contractor is equipped to operate in these conditions. That's what made this one worth doing.

What would your system look like with no mechanical equipment between the tank and the customer?

That’s the advantage of elevation - reliable, gravity-fed distribution.

An elevated tank uses gravity to do what ground-level systems need mechanical infrastructure to replicate, and gravity doesn't break down, lose power, or require a maintenance contract.

▪️ Fewer components such as pump stations or VFD’s, reduces reliance on continuously operating mechanical devices. Not to mention fuel cost savings from operating generators.
▪️ Lower lifecycle cost. Choosing a Composite Elevated Tank reduces long-term operating costs through lower energy use and minimized material and mechanical maintenance over an 80-year lifespan.
▪️ Operational simplicity. Fill the tank during off-peak hours, let gravity handle distribution. Your operators manage a passive system instead of troubleshooting an active one.

Design the system so gravity does the work - not your operators, not your equipment.

40,000 gallons of water. That's what it takes to produce a single car.

Cooling systems, paint processes, and facility operations all depend on uninterrupted water supply - which is why automotive manufacturers spec elevated storage that delivers gravity-fed pressure without relying on pumps or the power grid.

Landmark has delivered elevated tanks for facilities supporting Toyota, Hyundai, and Ford - each with the expedited schedules and complex site coordination that large-scale manufacturing demands.

When production can't stop, the water system can't either.

Landmark's Composite Elevated Tanks (CETs) in high-heat regions are designed with specific considerations that keep the system performing through decades of extreme summers:

▪️ Thermal stratification is addressed in the design phase. Hydrodynamic mixing systems are designed to maintain homogeneous disinfectant residual throughout the tank, even when sustained solar exposure warms the upper volume.
▪️ Coating systems are specified for the environment. UV-resistant, high-performance coatings paired with proper surface preparation extend service life and reduce long-term maintenance cycles in sun-intensive climates.
▪️Thermal movement is engineered into the details. Steel expansion under sustained heat is accommodated through roof connections, piping systems (including overflow lines), and shell connection details. This allows controlled movement so the structure performs as designed across the full temperature range.

From water quality to structural movement, climate-driven design decisions play a significant role in long-term asset performance.

What climate factors are you planning around for your next project?

Why does steel plate size matter in elevated tank construction?

Every weld seam on a tank is a potential failure point. It is where coatings are most vulnerable, where corrosion is most likely to initiate, and where long-term maintenance costs concentrate. The fewer seams in a finished tank, the better it performs over its service life.

Landmark's fabrication approach is built around this principle. By utilizing larger steel plates and advanced plasma cutting and contour beveling systems, we reduce the total number of weld seams in every tank we build. The result is a smoother substrate for coatings, fewer areas susceptible to corrosion, and a structure that requires less maintenance over decades of service.

It is a detail most people never see. But it is one of the reasons our tanks last.

Safety is more than a program - it is how we learn, lead, and work together.

Last week, Landmark’s entire EHS team came together in the field to continue advancing how we support our crews, our projects, and our business. Site visits like this are an important reminder that the best safety systems are built by understanding work where it actually happens - alongside the people closest to the work.

Our recent EHS staff meeting focused on strengthening event learning, improving how we capture field feedback, supporting better audit and follow-up processes, and continuing to apply Human and Organizational Performance principles across the organization. The goal is simple: learn more, blame less, improve systems, and make safe work easier to do.

We are proud of the continued work our EHS team is doing across the U.S. and Canada to support our operations, listen to our teams, and help cultivate a culture where learning and improvement are part of everyday work.

Thank you to everyone who continues to lead safety in the field, in the shop, and across every level of Landmark.
