Yesterday on my drive home with our new foster pups , I stopped in Cleveland Tx to get gas. An older gentleman pumping gas next to me noticed the dogs and struck up a conversation.
After telling him I work with rescues up in the DFW area, he asked if I knew a local rescuer named Melanie O’Keeffe. I told him I wasn't familiar with her. Out of curiosity, I asked him why?
He then shared that a few years ago, during the peak of summer heat, he repaired and eventually replaced the AC unit out side her mobile home, so she and the dogs wouldn't suffer in the heat. Knowing money was tight for her, he did all the work on a handshake, trusting her promises to pay him as soon as she could.
Instead, she eventually blocked him on her phone and on social media, leaving the bill unpaid.
What really surprised me was that despite being ripped off, he was still very kind, and had nothing ugly to say about her. He said he “chalked it up to a hard business lesson” But said he will never do a favor for anyone again!
Unfortunately, I did not get his name, but his kindness and gentle demeanor stood out.
If anyone knows this lady , please encourage her to do the right thing and at least reach out to him to set up a payment plan. I know times are tough on so many of us . But Failing to honor a debt to someone who stepped up to help you , and your dogs, when you needed it most is unacceptable.
