Woodworking Technique Spotlight: Joint Construction

Miter Joint with Spline Reinforcement
The primary body construction utilizes a reinforced miter joint, combining a clean exterior aesthetic with structural integrity. While standard miter joints rely on end-grain to end-grain gluing—which lacks significant bonding strength due to adhesive absorption—the integration of dual contrasting wood splines overcomes this limitation. By introducing splines running perpendicular to the miter, the design engages side and edge grain surfaces that securely bond with the adhesive. This cross-grain alignment significantly reinforces the corner against stress, making it an ideal joint application for boxes, frames, and cabinetry.

Face Frame Construction & Detailing
The face frame is assembled using structural half-lap joints, which maximize gluing surface area across side and edge grain to ensure long-term stability and rigidity. To refine the final presentation, the assembly is finished with a precise corner inlay bezel and a clean 45-degree chamfer, balancing durability with architectural detail.

Past Project Spotlight: Custom Presentation Gavel & Leather-Wrapped Handle

The Backstory & Challenge
Fabricated roughly a decade ago (back when I first started this kind of stuff), this project marked my first custom wooden hammer build. Facing a strict 24-hour deadline for a tight-turnaround going-away gift, the piece had to be designed, turned, assembled, and finished in a single day for delivery the following morning.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Wood Selection: The head was crafted from solid pine to meet the immediate turnaround requirement, paired with a red oak handle selected for strength, grain contrast, and structural integrity.

Joinery & Finish: The handle was joined to the head, and matching painted accents were applied to both the head and the pommel cap to unify the design elements.

Grip & Details: The handle features a hand-wrapped leather grip anchored securely with hammered wire detailing. To complete the presentation aesthetic, a matching leather lanyard was fitted through the end of the handle.

Refinement & Legacy
Despite the demanding time constraints, this early build demonstrated the utility of combining woodturning, leathercraft, and metal accents under tight deadlines—a foundation that continues to inform my approach to custom woodworking projects today.

Past Project Spotlight: Freeze-Damaged Irrigation Repair & Minimal-Impact Lawn Restoration

The Issue
An early-season hard freeze struck while the irrigation system remained pressurized, causing water trapped in the supply lines and valve manifolds to expand and fracture the PVC piping. The resulting subterranean leaks compromised system pressure and caused localized pooling across the property.

Our Solution
To resolve the leaks while protecting the established lawn, we executed a targeted repair strategy:

Surgical Excavation: Identified precise leak locations using moisture detection and pressure testing. Hand-dug only the immediate areas around damaged pipe sections and valve clusters to minimize turf disruption.

Sod Preservation: Carefully cut, removed, and preserved the top layer of sod in uniform blocks, keeping the root structures intact during the repair process.

Piping & Valve Repair: Cut out fractured pipe segments and freeze-damaged valves, splicing in heavy-duty replacement fittings and pressure-testing the system to verify water-tight integrity.

Backfill & Seamless Lawn Restoration: Backfilled and compacted the trenching soil before reinstalling the original sod blocks flush with the surrounding grade. This eliminated the need for complete reseeding and allowed normal lawn activities to resume immediately.

The Result
The irrigation system was fully restored to peak operating efficiency, enabling the property owner to reinstate an automated watering schedule. Our low-impact excavation technique preserved the appearance of the lawn and spared the client the time and expense of turf re-establishment.

Past Project Spotlight: Custom Reproduction of Historic Door Casing (Turn-of-the-Century Home)

The Challenge
The main entry door frame and interior trim on a turn-of-the-century (circa 1900) home had suffered severe structural and cosmetic damage. The door frame was split, and the original decorative trim was fractured in multiple places beyond repair. Because stock architectural molding's from modern suppliers do not match the deep profiles and dimensions of early 20th-century millwork, off-the-shelf replacements were not an option.

Our Approach & Ex*****on
To preserve the home’s architectural integrity while restoring the entrance, we executed a complete replacement and custom fabrication process:

Removal & Preparation: Carefully dismantled the fractured trim and split jamb assembly, preparing the rough opening for a period-accurate replacement door.

Custom Profile Fabrication: Utilizing three separate stock lumber components, we engineered a custom, multi-piece built-up trim profile to mirror the original millwork.

Beveling: Cut precise interior bevels on the table saw to replicate the angles of the original trim.

Profiling: Used a router to shape the centered round-over and outer edge profiles.

Lamination & Assembly: Joined and seamless-glued the machined strips under tension to create a permanent, unified moldings assembly.

Installation & Finishing: Precision-cut and fitted the custom casing around the new door frame, aligning every joint perfectly with the home's existing interior trim.

The Result:
The newly fabricated casing fully restored the main entryway’s structural integrity while maintaining the historic character of the home. The custom-milled trim seamlessly matched the surrounding architectural details, delivering an authentic finish that off-the-shelf products could not achieve.

Past Project Spotlight: Sliding Patio Door Replacement & Structural Adjustment

The Issue
A residential property manager requested assistance with a severely compromised wood-frame sliding glass door. The installation exhibited multiple points of failure:

Mechanical & Security Failure: The door was off-track, difficult to operate, and no longer capable of locking properly.

Structural Deterioration: Moisture accumulation had rotted the lower wood framing, compounded by localized animal damage on both the interior and exterior faces.

Thermal Seal Failure: Condensation between the glass panes confirmed the insulated glass unit (IGU) seal had failed, severely compromising the door’s energy efficiency.

Our Solution
To replace the failing unit without triggering costly interior drywall or exterior siding repairs, we executed a tailored reframing and installation plan:

Demolition & Rough Opening Adjustment: We removed the original door and surrounding trim. Because the replacement composite door featured different outer dimensions than the original wood unit, we resized the rough opening using dimensional lumber, structural OSB, and house wrap to ensure a weather-tight tie-in with the existing building envelope.

Precision Installation & Flashing: The new composite door was set, plumbed, squared, and leveled in the opening. We secured the frame with heavy-duty exterior fasteners and sealed the perimeter using rubberized butyl flashing tape and interior expanding foam insulation to eliminate air infiltration.

Custom Trim Solution: To bridge the gap created by the smaller door frame—while avoiding full-scale siding replacement or drywall finishing—we engineered custom trim details. On the exterior, wide cellular trim integrated seamlessly with the existing siding. On the interior, we crafted and installed a custom trim cap.

The Result
The project fully restored security, smooth operation, and thermal performance to the patio entrance. By engineering custom trim solutions, we delivered an elevated interior and exterior finish while saving the property owner significant time and expense in drywall, paint, and siding remediation.
