Fans and Friends of Duffy's Cut We are fans and friends of the Duffy's Cut site and the ongoing project headed by Dr. William Watson This is a fan and friend page of Duffy's Cut in Malvern PA.

It is not formerly affiliated with Immaculata and/or the site, it is just a community page to show appreciation for the work of Dr. William Watson, his brother Rev. Francis Watson and his crew over the years! Duffy's Cut is the name given to a stretch of railroad tracks about 30 miles west of Philadelphia, United States, originally built for the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad in the summer and

fall of 1832. The line later became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Main Line. Railroad contractor Philip Duffy hired 57 Irish immigrants to lay this line through the area's densely wooded hills and ravines. The workers came to Philadelphia from the Ulster counties of Donegal, Tyrone and Derry to work in Pennsylvania's nascent railroad industry. Less than two months after their arrival, all 57 are believed to have died during the second cholera pandemic. While most died of the disease, forensic evidence suggests that some may have been murdered, perhaps due to fear of contagion, as the pandemic spanned several continents and many years. In the Battery Park neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York lies the Irish Hunger Memorial. The famine cottage comes from Co. Mayo and the stone, soil, and natural vegetation all come from the West of Ireland. Surrounding the cottage there are stones from every Irish county, with the name of the county inscribed on each stone. The memorial was completed in 2002. Incredibly beautiful and well worth a visit.

In fields once green with golden grain,
Now silent lies the land in pain.
The blight came swift, the hunger stayed,
And hope beneath the soil was laid.

A mother weeps with empty bowl,
A child fades with no control.
Across the sea, the lost set sail,
With broken hearts and faces pale.

Yet still they rose, through grief and strife,
To plant new roots, to build new life.
And in their songs, we hear the cry—
Of those who starved, but would not die.

On Monday, June 9 at 10 AM the Duffy's Cut Project team will be making a public announcement regarding a breakthrough discovery of a second Irish immigrant railroader mass grave. This grave is connected to the 1832 events in Duffy's Cut, but is located eleven miles farther west in Downingtown at the site of present-day Northwood Cemetery.

Members of the research team will be discussing the findings and the importance of the Northwood site in the early history of the railroad and of Irish immigration in Chester County.

The press and the interested public are cordially invited. Refreshments will be served. The location of the event is on the first floor of the Gabriele Library near the Duffy's Cut Museum at 10 AM.
