INTRODUCING
The Native Plantsman
We are happy to announce our newest adventure: The Native Plantsman. The Native Plantsman offers sustainable and future-proof gardening services by harnessing the power of native plants to reduce water use, prevent soil erosion, muscle out weeds and invasive plants, provide massive ecological benefits and bring all-season beauty to the underused parts of your gardens and outdoor spaces.
Low Maintenance
-No watering once established
-No fertilizing
-Fewer pests, diseases and pollutants
-More beneficial predators
-Clay, roots, compaction: native plants can handle it all
-Less storm run off and erosion
Prevent Unwanted Weeds And Invasive Plants
Once up and running our plantings will thrive all on their own while dominating the space, preventing weeds and other outlaws from grabbing a foothold.
Massive Contributions To Wildlife: Both Local And Migratory
Many types of beneficial animals, from bees to birds to frogs, depend on specific native plants to survive (and sometimes ONLY that plant). Diversity is key! A carefully selected variety of complimentary plants can provide abundant resources for your local pollinators, bug-eaters and otherwise helpful friends.
Ecological Services and Benefits
From petite, shady townhome gardens to endless rolling estates a smart native planting will greatly improve the quality of all things around it: More water, oxygen and aerobic microbes in the soil, less carbon and pollutants in the sky; More helpful animals, beneficial insects and healthy fungi and less invasive pests and diseases! Literally everyone wins! Except the weeds and pests! And they suck!
The Never Ending Story
Nothing is more in tune with the seasons than plants on their home turf. Once they establish themselves they will provide a never ending display of color and texture throughout the years, bringing the dynamics and drama of a living ecosystem to our often static and stiff ornamental gardens. Just think of it as jazz. The vibes are free, flowing and a little wild but also sophisticated, intellectual and intricately laid out. It's never the same and full of surprises! And the bees can eat the jazz!
Will it look like weeds?
While its very easy for a native planting to look like the side of the highway the secret is to select a smart grouping of complimentary plants - we call these plant communities - the right plant community with the right design can, instead of looking like an unkempt lawn, actually appear quite modern and sophisticated: focused more on shape and texture over color and opulence. As native plants often have short bloom times we make the most use of their leaf shape and size, seed pods and branches to create a wild, but cultured, aesthetic.
What about my (favorite plant)?
To paraphrase the great Doug Tallamy: "The goal is not to replace every plant with a native. The goal is to simply plant as many natives as possible." With this philosophy in mind we will approach your garden or outdoor space with an open mind, gentle hand and a keen eye. We will encourage you to let us remove any invasive or “not great” exotic plants and stuff a native in every nook and cranny possible but the goal is, again, to simply add as many natives to your garden as possible (not rip it all out and make you feel bad for having a couple Nandinas).
Do you landscape?
To paraphrase the ok Django: "No". We try to have as little destructive impact on the space as possible and will always first look to plants to solve issues with the site. Whether its erosion, flooding, traffic or other factors plants are quite handy at solving issues of earth and water. If a landscaping solution is required beyond the abilities of some shovels and wheelbarrow, a third party contractor would be needed for any hardscaping or earth moving . We prefer to try and solve all problems with plants.
While not your traditional ornamental garden installation, its a powerful but gentle process that gives your garden a diverse cast of resilient and showy characters that give year-round beauty and excellent ecological benefits!
