Q: Should I be able to hear my ductwork?

A: With a good duct system and a proper install, you really shouldn't hear much of anything. Whistling, "tin canning," or popping as the ducts expand usually points to undersized ductwork or equipment that wasn't set up right.

Q: Should I be able to hear my ductwork?

A: No. Good ductwork and a good installation are quiet — you really shouldn't hear anything at all.

When you do hear something, it's telling you something. Whistling usually means the duct is undersized and air is being forced through too small an opening. That popping or "tin canning" sound is the ductwork expanding rapidly because the system isn't set up right.

Different sounds, same root cause: the duct system isn't doing its job.
