Harvesting Spinach!

Wow, I feel so lucky to be able to feed my family this delicious, homegrown food. Free of pesticides and unwanted chemicals. Grown in my own backyard.

I planted these spinach seedlings in early March, and they are very happy being slightly under the shade of the larger broccoli plants.

You know it's good when your kids are excited to eat it! We have been eating spinach salads, omelettes, and loading it into my favorite vegetable lasagna. Yum!

🌿 A rainy weekday made for the perfect stroll through the U.S. Botanic Garden in DC. It's one of my favorite places to go when I need a mental break. Horticulture students were quietly taking notes and sketching plant images, and visitors were enjoying a moment of peace and tranquility in the atrium.

They currently have a beautiful collection of orchids on display. It's always inspiring to see the incredible variety of plants thriving under one roof. I highly recommend a visit any time of year, but especially soon, as DC starts to explode with color and life with the upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival!

Warmer days and garden season are just around the corner! 🌱💚

The beginning of March here in gardening zone 7a means prepping your garden for planting cool weather spring veggies.

It's not a glamorous task, but one that must be done. I severely neglected tidying up in the fall (oops!) I still had crispy tomato vines creeping up their cages, old brassicas that were taken down by fall pests, pepper plants, and tons of fallen leaves.

The four raised beds were cleared of rotting plant material and old plants were trimmed at the base, leaving their roots intact. I left a lot of leaf debris in the soil and I spread a new layer of leaf grow compost on top.

Everything looks fresh and ready for planting! I plan on trying a cover crop this year which I have never done before. The idea is that the cover crop acts as a mulch, suppressing weeds and enriching the soil. Then you plant your veggies right into the cover crop.

I have newly sprouted snap peas and leafy lettuce greens growing inside under lights, waiting until the nightly temperatures are a little warmer before transplanting them outside.

Are you as excited for spring as I am?

🌱❄️ *Spring dreams on a snowy day!* ❄️🌱

While the world outside is covered in a blanket of white, I’m cozy inside, planning for a garden bursting with life and color.

Today’s to-do list:

ordering seeds

organizing my planting schedule

prepping for winter sowing hardy annuals

I just have to remember to stay focused on the plants I love to grow and eat. I tend to get overly ambitious and then and then run out of steam, or become too overwhelmed.

It's so fun to dream up a new season of growing. I love that each year you get to press the "reset" button and try again.

This year I'm adding many more natives and perennials, while removing a lot of lawn to encourage beneficial wildlife to visit my garden.

🌿 You Can Grow Figs in Maryland! 🌿

My husband David LOVES figs and really wanted to start growing some in our home garden. We bought two healthy and beautiful Chicago Hardy fig trees from my favorite nursery - Thanksgiving Farm - and planted them last fall in a sunny, south-facing location.

This summer they have rewarded us with the most amazing fruit!! And I know next year is going to be even better!

Did you know that Chicago Hardy Figs are one of the best fig varieties for Maryland’s climate?

Here’s why you should consider adding this delicious fruit tree to your garden:

1️⃣ Cold-Tolerant: Unlike many fig varieties, Chicago Hardy Figs can withstand colder temperatures (down to 10°F). Perfect for Maryland winters!

2️⃣ Low Maintenance: They are incredibly easy to care for. With just a bit of pruning and proper placement, you'll enjoy fresh figs right from your garden.

3️⃣ Delicious and Nutritious: Chicago Hardy Figs are known for their sweet, rich flavor and are packed with fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins. One of my favorite things to do is make fig jam to spread on top of baked Brie🤤

4️⃣ Beautiful Addition to Your Garden: Figs aren’t just functional – they add a Mediterranean vibe with their lush, large leaves and beautiful fruits.

Maryland gardeners, if you’re looking for a rewarding addition to your kitchen garden, Chicago Hardy Figs might be your next favorite plant!

It's time for the Great Frederick Fair!!🎡🌽🚜🐄

Last year, I was honored to have a display in the Farm and Garden building, where I shared gardening tips and a beautiful custom-built, raised bed vegetable garden.

This year, I had an incredible experience entering items from my home garden into the fair. My Serrano peppers took home first prize!! And my dried Red Hidatsa and Black Cherokee beans won first and second place respectively! 🎉

I am especially honored that my David Austin Molineux rose received a very special award, The Elizabeth S. Frank Best of Show for a single cut rose❤️ Even though it wilted quickly on display, it looked absolutely stunning for its moment in the spotlight.

My son Aiden took home a cool ribbon for the scariest painted pumpkin, and first place for his homemade concord grape jam! So proud🥰

Even my husband David got in on the action, submitting his beautiful handmade wooden Maryland flag.

Feeling so grateful for the recognition and proud of my little garden’s hard work. Love the Frederick Fair!!!!
