Summers almost here! And so is the increased risk of power outages.
Power outages aren’t something most people are thinking about until they happen. And when they do, it can be an extreme inconvenience, especially when you’re trying to cool your home during the hot summer months. Certain areas of the US will face an elevated risk of energy shortages this summer, according to a seasonal grid reliability assessment from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

NERC says much of the Midwest, New England and the region from California to Louisiana are at risk during higher-than-normal peak demand.

And along with that, power outages.
But what should you do during an outage?

Daily tip:

Unplug your appliances. When the power comes back on, the initial surge can damage your appliances, especially if they’re not plugged into a surge protector. Electronics, such as TVs and computers, are particularly sensitive. To prevent damage, unplug everything as soon as the power goes out.

In its annual summer assessment released this week, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation noted we are facing a capacity shortfall leading to a "high risk of energy emergencies." The entire U.S. also could face a power outage emergency in the event of spikes in energy use.

Track lighting has made a come back!

Do you have an open beamed ceiling? No attic access?

The beauty of track lighting is that you can put the spotlights right where you need them, like over a dining space (without stealing too much attention from the furniture like a more dramatic chandelier would do). Or in a big, long kitchen, where you kind of need multiple lighting options (you want to cut your fingerling potatoes, not your fingers). A couple of simple tracks keeps things visually uncluttered.
