🎒 Back-to-School Means a Few Changes at Loring Flooring! 📚

Back-to-school season looks a little different for the Loring Flooring family this year!

As many of you know, our youngest daughter, Tristynn, has Down syndrome, and this year she started 3-year-old Pre-K. Attending school allows her to continue receiving the special services and support that are so important for her development. After giving it some thought, we decided that Mom and Dad doing school drop-off and pick-up is the best option for her right now, as riding the bus would likely be a little too overstimulating.

That means our workday may look a little different at times while we get used to juggling flooring schedules and school schedules! We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility as we find our new routine.

We also have another big back-to-school milestone to celebrate! 🎓 Our oldest daughter, Lexi, who has worked alongside us for the past three years while Mom stayed home with Tristynn, has officially started college at Blackhawk Tech! We couldn’t be more excited for her as she starts this next chapter.

And with Lexi heading off to college, there’s been another change to the Loring Flooring crew — the wife is officially back to work with me! Apparently, she thought three years at home was enough of a vacation. 😂😉

It’s definitely a season of changes around here, but that’s one of the things about being a small, family-owned business — our customers get to grow right along with our family.

Another great transformation from Loring Flooring!

For this project, we tore out a poorly installed laminate floor and replaced it with durable vinyl plank flooring—but as always, what’s underneath the finished floor was just as important as what you see on top.

We typically steer our customers away from laminate. While many laminate products are marketed as “waterproof,” in our experience they simply don’t hold up as well as vinyl plank in homes where water, kids, pets, and everyday life are a factor. We’ll install laminate if a customer specifically wants it, but we believe part of our job is being upfront about the products we would—or wouldn’t—recommend for our own homes.

This homeowner decided it was time for the old laminate to go and chose vinyl plank instead. After a decent amount of subfloor preparation (yes, we’re preaching floor prep again!), the new flooring went down beautifully.

A quality flooring installation starts long before the first plank is laid. Taking the time to properly prepare the floor makes all the difference in how the finished product looks, feels, and performs over time.

Main Floor Overhaul — Where Proper Prep Makes All the Difference

This main-floor transformation was one of those projects that required extensive floor preparation before the first plank could ever be installed (I know, I know we say this all the time)

One thing we often see misunderstood in flooring is the difference between flat and level.

When a flooring manufacturer requires a flat subfloor, that does not mean the entire house needs to be perfectly level. In an older home, making a floor truly level could require extensive structural or foundation work—and that isn’t what we’re trying to accomplish.

What we do need is a surface that is flat and within the flooring manufacturer’s specifications. That means addressing high spots, low spots, dips, humps, and transitions so the new flooring has the proper foundation underneath it.

It may not be the most exciting part of a flooring transformation, and much of our work gets covered up in the end, but proper floor prep is one of the most important parts of a quality installation.

At Loring Flooring, we don’t believe in simply covering up problems and hoping for the best. We take the time to understand what the floor actually needs and prepare it properly—because a beautiful finished floor is only as good as the surface underneath it.

Flat doesn’t always mean level—and knowing the difference matters.

✨ Sometimes the best flooring decision is the one that doesn’t make us a dime. ✨

During a recent project, we pulled back the existing carpet and discovered something worth stopping for—beautiful, pristine hardwood floors hiding underneath.

Unfortunately, the other bedrooms didn’t have the same hardwood underneath, but finding these floors was certainly a hidden treasure worth preserving!

It would have been easy to simply move forward with covering them back up and completing the planned installation. Instead, we showed the homeowner exactly what they had and recommended considering the original hardwood rather than spending money unnecessarily.

At Loring Flooring, our job isn’t just to sell you on new flooring. It’s to help you make the best decision for your home, even when that means less work—and less money—for us.

Not every contractor will point out an option that could eliminate part of the work they were hired to do. We believe transparency matters. If you already have beautiful flooring worth preserving, we’re going to tell you.

We recently completed a vinyl plank repair in a rental unit for one of our longtime customers. The existing flooring had been installed by another contractor and had sustained some damage, but replacing the entire floor just wasn’t necessary—or in the budget—quite yet.

At Loring Flooring, we understand that every flooring situation is different. Not every damaged floor requires a complete replacement. Using specialized repair techniques, we can often disguise damaged areas, restore the appearance of the floor, and help extend its life for as long as possible.

🐾 Don’t Replace It If You Can Repair It! 🐾

Accidents happen—especially when our four-legged family members get a little too curious! This recent repair is a great example of how a damaged section of carpet doesn’t always mean you have to replace the entire room.

If you have a leftover piece of your original carpet from the installation, there’s a good chance a professional repair can make the damage far less noticeable while saving you the cost of new carpet.

That’s why we always recommend hanging onto any extra carpet after an installation. Even a small remnant can be invaluable if you ever need a repair due to pet damage, stains, burns, or other accidents.

This weekend was one our family will never forget. ❤️

Our sweet Tristynn was crowned Little Miss Firecracker during Tutty Baker Days, and we couldn’t be more proud of her. Watching her smile, wave, and simply be herself reminded us how powerful an inclusive and supportive community can be.
