Gardening season seems far off with cooler temperatures, frozen ground and less sunshine in parts of the country. But the gardening season is approaching quickly and now’s the time to consider when and what seeds to order.

Are you ready? Here’s what you should know about ordering seeds so you can look forward to a successful planting season this year.

The best rule of thumb to order seeds is 6-8 weeks before the last frost for your area. You can not order seeds too early.

Keep in mind there has been some seed shortages since 2020, and that trend could continue. It's predicted that the largest famine will occur in 2023 due to a fertilizer shortage in Russia and Belarus.

Not since the end of WWII have the concept of Victory Gardens expanded on private and public lands due to COVID. The best way to ensure the seeds you need are available is to order early.

FALL GARDEN TIPS

The heat is still with us and it's time to work in the garden once again. Harvesting should be your number one priority. You planned and planted your garden and worked the plants from spring until now, so harvest what you planted.

It's time to plant the fall garden. You will be dealing with extreme heat in August, stay hydrated. Wear a hat and use the mornings to get a lot of the work completed.

Early August is a great time to prune rose bushes. Once pruning is complete be sure to fertilize the rose bushes for more and better blooms in October.

Early August is a great time to plant your fall garden, If you are planting tomatoes, they must be planted now. It will take 70 to 120 days to see tomatoes to produce a harvest.

Other vegetables to consider for a fall garden with best planting dates are;
NOW- Tomatoes.
8/1/22 thru 9/12/22- Bush or Pole beans. Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower, Kale, Lettuce, Broccoli, Sweet Onions, Garlic, Collards, Mustard, Cabbage, Spinach,
8/1/ to 10/15/22- Swiss Chard.

Herbs to consider for fall garden;
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, Chives, Lavender, Lemon Mint, and Anise.

Starts vs Seeds
Planting starts will usually allow you to harvest earlier but not always. Fast growing vegetables like lettuce, parsley, radishes, and young leaves like kale, spinach, and Swiss chard can be grown from seeds in larger quantities that start.

At Texas Coastal Seed we identify vegetables and herbs in the title (fall garden) if the plant is recommended for fall growing.

SEED EXPIRATION DATE

You have your garden planted as well as your flower beds but you have seeds left over. Do you dispose of the leftover seeds because they will be past their expiration date, or do you keep them for next years garden?

One article that I read stated that President Truman became concerned about seeds when he saw and heard about seeds being lost forever during WWII and concerns of having enough seeds to start farming again after the war ended. He was concerned what if war came to the US. He wanted to protect our seeds.

I know some people that disposes of seeds if the expiration date has been met. After all, in 1940, the 76th Congress made it a law that seed packages must have labeling to prevent misrepresentation, including a viable date, not expiration date.

However, viable dates were not enforced for 40 years when in 1988, the 100th Congress revisited the Federal Seed Act and made some revisions including viable dates.

An Act to regulate interstate and foreign commerce in seeds; to require labeling and to prevent misrepresentation of seeds in interstate commerce; to require certain standards with respect to certain imported seeds; and for other purposes. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that this Act may be cited as the “Federal Seed Act.”

In 2012, Russian scientists found a Chickweed seed in a Siberian squirrel burrow that had been stuck in permafrost for over 30,000 years. They later germinated the seed.

After a thousand years in the ground several date palm seeds estimated to be 2,000 years old was found in the ground in the Masada fortress on the edge of the Dead Sea in Israel. Hot and dry conditions might be all you need to awake far into the future. One of the seeds germinated.

Although seeds do not technically “go bad,” viable dates are used on seed packaging as a measure of the likelihood that the seeds will be viable. Depending upon the type of seeds, environmental conditions, and the manner in which the seeds have been stored, the germination rate of older seed packets may be greatly impacted.

Why expiration dates on seeds? In fact, there are not any expiration dates on seed packets. There will be a viable date that reads like “packed for sell by 12/22”.

JULY GARDENING

by

Texas Coastal Seeds

It's July, the soil, and plants are baking in the sunshine. For some areas rain is a distant memory with the end to spring rains. It's time to be water-wise for the summer months ahead. Plants in the ground, or containers need an ample supply of water to grow and be productive. Even shrubs and trees will need water.

Utilize mulch to hold moisture around the plants. At least 3 inches of mulch for ground and container plants. If you have an abundance of dry leaves use leaves as a mulch. They stay in place, hold moisture, feed the soil, and are attractive.

Kill unwanted weeds from the garden, flower beds, around shrubs and trees.

If you have 5 gallon buckets drill holes in the bottom and place them by young trees. Fill the buckets with water and the water will slowly drip the trees.

Plants that appear are dying water with some coffee-tea. Oftentimes the coffee-tea mix will rejuvenate a dying plant. If you have plenty of coffee grounds, place the grounds around the base of weeds and watch the weeds die.

Keep adding to the compost.

Stake up tall plants.

Harvest daily.

Add shade to plants that need shade.
