Before and after w**d eating. We’re turning the chicken yard into my “secret garden”.

Last year, this was the chicken yard and it looked as barren as the face of the moon. I knew all the chicken p**p was enriching the soil but I also assumed it would just be barren until I planted something in it. My gosh I was so wrong.

There’s (unfortunately) loads of Bahia, but also lots of chickw**d, and about 20 chicken planted huckleberries. If anyone knows what to do with huckleberries, besides feeding chickens, let me know!

It’s August 1st which means it’s time to get serious about the fall garden. Here in Florida, fall gardens start late and run long due to the heat which means one key, beautiful thing, we can take our time. Because we get to slow down this time of year, I like to spend the first week or so of August cleaning out and amending

At 2 pm, 3 years ago today, we got a call that fundamentally changed us in an instant. A little boy had been born that needed us to love him and after 5 years of praying and waiting (and a fair amount of pleading and begging and bargaining with The Big Guy thrown in) we got to meet our son.

He has grown so much in the past year, becoming the big brother to three younger siblings much much much more gracefully and effortlessly than I became a mother to four. He is kind, scary smart, and always ready for a dance party. He can catch chickens now and knows garden snacks are the best snacks. I’m pretty sure he’s figuring out how to read.

Our orbit changed three years ago today and I have been so grateful for every day since

Listen it’s not that those products are useless and don’t work, many of them are helpful, it’s just that they aren’t necessary.

Finding little green growing things in the chicken yard, even if they are w**ds, was already a massive morale boost, BUT THEN I FOUND TOMATOES!
