FLORIDA: The very uncommon June cool front! A big drop in humidity for two days Thursday (June 4) and Friday (June 5). Gusty NE winds 15-25 MPH around as well for central and north Florida. Dare I say, Thursday morning it may even feel a tad cool in places along the I-10 corridor. Open the windows! Remember, these are the *dew points* and humidity shown below.

Soupy air and summer humidity returns this weekend quickly.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Rainfall over the weekend brought some welcome relief, but drought conditions across northeast and central Florida remain severe.

While many areas received rain, a single weather event cannot make up for months of significant rainfall deficits. ๐Ÿ“Š In northeast Florida, nearly 31 inches of rainfall over the next three months would be needed to eliminate current drought conditions.

๐Ÿ’ง Residents, businesses, and large water users are encouraged to continue conserving water and follow all mandatory and voluntary watering restrictions currently in place.

Every drop counts as we work together to protect Floridaโ€™s water resources.

Effective today, May 27, 2026, Alachua County has lifted the countywide burn ban following substantial rainfall across the region over the past several days and additional rain forecasted throughout the week.

County officials, in coordination with the Florida Forest Service (FFS), determined that improving environmental conditions have significantly reduced the immediate threat of wildfires.

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which measures soil and vegetation dryness, has dropped to 415 from 618 last week and is expected to continue declining as rainfall persists.

โ€œRecent rainfall has significantly improved conditions across Alachua County and reduced the wildfire risk that led to the burn ban,โ€ said Fire Chief Harold Theus. โ€œWhile the ban is being lifted, we encourage residents to continue practicing safe and responsible outdoor burning to help prevent accidental fires.โ€

Residents are reminded to follow all local and state regulations regarding outdoor burning. Officials caution that dry conditions can return quickly, especially during warm, windy periods.

Alachua County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service will continue monitoring drought conditions, weather patterns, and wildfire activity. If conditions worsen, the county may reinstate the burn ban to protect public safety and property.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official Alachua County communication channels for updates regarding burn conditions and potential restrictions.

Blurry photos of poison ivy? No! This is box elder. These two plants are famously confused, but there are key differences:

๐ŸŒฟThe most reliable tell: box elder leaves grow opposite each other on the stem, while poison ivy leaflets grow alternate. This single trait can save you a lot of misery. Also Poison ivy leaflets have a pointed tip and often a slightly irregular, wavy or toothed edge; the middle leaflet has a longer stem (petiolule). Box elder leaflets are more coarsely and evenly toothed, similar to a maple leaf in texture.

๐ŸŒณBox elder is a tree โ€” even young saplings grow from a woody trunk. Poison ivy grows as a vine, shrub, or ground cover, never a true tree.

Quick rule of thumb: If you see it growing as a vine climbing a tree (especially with hairy-looking aerial rootlets on the vine), itโ€™s almost certainly poison ivy. If itโ€™s coming up as a single woody stem from the ground, itโ€™s more likely box elder.
