Here is the most likely reason for your heater struggling:
Extreme Cold Limits Capacity: When the outdoor temperature is 20°F , the temperature difference between inside and outside is vast. A furnace or heat pump may not have the capacity to maintain, say, 68°F if it was not designed for such extreme temperatures, especially if the home has poor insulation. If you have other alternatives to heat use it to help take some of the strain off the unit. Electric heaters, kerosene/propane heaters, wood/gas fire places etc…

We have had several calls about heat not heating to your set temperature. This is very common. If your unit was operating fine before the 10 degree weather and ice more than likely it’s just struggling keeping up. Very common when units run in emergency heat mode. Please do not allow HVAC Companies to scame you and say they can come fix the problem. If you’re still concerned after reading this then give us a call.

Heat Pumps are usually fine with snow - But ICE & Freezing rain are No Bueno as your heat pump cannot defrost the top fan screen - My advice is this : As freezing rain starts - switch your heat pump thermostat to “ Emergency Heat” which will shut off your outdoor unit and utilize your electric heat strips or furnace if you have dual fuel . Then cover your outdoor unit with anything like a tarp , cardboard, water proof tablecloth etc - anything to keep ice out of the fan . After storm passes remove cover and go back to regular heat setting. This way your outdoor unit will be happy & clear of ice and your outdoor fan won’t be locked down by ice and burn up . If you skip my advice and the top of your heat pump freezes over and you end up burning up - Give us a call.

What a wonderful job you all did sharing this post. The past few weeks we have been busy gathering toys and clothes for 9 children, along with donating 40+ toys for a very sweet family that does a toy drive for CHOA in honor of their son. What a blessing it has been to help others. I want to thank all of our supporters for making this possible. ❤️ I hope everyone has a wonderful, blessed holiday filled with love and laughter.
