"When our freeze alarm went off last winter Bryce Huefner from Your Cabin Keeper responded and let us know our propane was out, he contacted the propane company and had it delivered that day! The system they installed saved us and we are glad to have them watch over our home in Bear Lake." Kathrine English Bear Lake West Idaho

"Do I really need professional monitoring, or can I just watch the cameras myself?"

It's the question we get most, and the honest answer is: it depends on where your place is and how fast you could get there.

SELF-MONITORED — you get the alert on your phone, you decide what to do. Cameras, notifications, clips saved. Starts around $20–25/month. This works well if you're close by, home most of the time, and mostly want a record of what happened and a way to check in.

PROFESSIONALLY MONITORED — a real monitoring center gets the alarm too, 24/7, and dispatches even if you're asleep, on a plane, or two hours down the canyon with no service. Starts around $40/month. This is the one that matters for cabins, second homes, and anyone who travels.

Here's the honest test we give people: if the alarm went off at 2 a.m. and your phone was face-down on silent — what happens next? If the answer is "nothing," professional monitoring is worth the difference.

And it's not just intruders. Monitored freeze and water-leak sensors have saved more Utah cabins than any camera ever has.

We're a local Utah company. We'll tell you straight which one fits your place — even if it's the cheaper one.

Had a knock on the door this month? Alarm systems are one of Utah's biggest door-to-door sales categories, and the paperwork moves fast. Good news: Utah law and the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule give you three business days to cancel a contract signed at your home — no penalty, no reason required. Our new guide covers contract terms, what a "free" system really costs across five years, and the questions worth asking before you sign. https://ycksecurity.com/blog/door-to-door-alarm-sales-wasatch-front-2026/

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Reagan was very helpful and thorough!" — Diane T., Google review

Short and sweet — and honestly, "thorough" might be our favorite word to hear.

Because that's the whole job. Anybody can mount a camera. The part that actually protects your place is the walkthrough before it: where does the driveway sightline break, which door never quite latches, is there a water line that would freeze first, does the internet at the cabin actually hold a connection in February.

Thank you, Diane. We appreciate you taking the time.

Backpacks are coming out of the closet.

Rich County kids head back Aug 19, Salt Lake City on Aug 18, Cache County on Aug 25 — and just like that, summer's over. Raspberry Days wrapped last weekend, the beaches at Bear Lake are thinning out, and the lake settles into that quiet stretch we all secretly love.

But here's the thing about the quiet season: it changes who's around. All summer, your cabin had family in it most weekends and neighbors two doors down. Come September, a lot of places at Garden City, Laketown, Fish Haven, and St. Charles go from busy to empty overnight. Same story down on the Wasatch Front — houses that were full all summer are empty from 8 to 5 once school starts.

That's not a reason to worry. It's just a good moment to check a couple of things: Are your cameras still aimed where you need them? Did that back door latch ever get fixed? Does anyone get an alert if the power drops at the cabin?

We're a local Utah company, and we live here too. If you'd like a fresh set of eyes on your place before the season turns, we'll come walk it with you — no charge, no pressure.

Have a great first week back, everybody.

Frozen pipes are the most expensive thing that happens to a Bear Lake cabin — and it happens in February, when nobody's there. The average frozen-pipe insurance claim runs over $20,000, and a burst-pipe claim averages $27,000. Freeze sensors, leak alarms, and an automatic shutoff valve are the cheap fix, and now (not October) is the time to put them in. Renting your cabin at Bear Lake? Raspberry Days weekend means back-to-back turnovers and a lot of people you've never met holding a door code. Our new guide covers what actually belongs on a rental — exterior cameras (and the indoor-camera rules that can cost you a listing), keypad locks, noise sensors, and monitoring for the 40 weeks nobody's there. https://ycksecurity.com/blog/vacation-rental-security-bear-lake-2026/

Heading out of town this summer? Here's the question worth asking before you go: who's watching your house while you're gone? 🧳

July and August are peak travel months — and peak opportunity for break-ins, because homes sit empty and it shows. The good news: a few simple things make your place look lived-in and get you a real response if something happens.

Your pre-trip security checklist from your local Utah installers:
✅ Cameras covering the driveway and main entry
✅ Smart locks + light timers so the house looks occupied
✅ Leak and freeze sensors (a burst line while you're away is a nightmare)
✅ 24/7 monitoring so someone responds even when you can't

Self-monitored camera setups start around $20–25/month; 24/7 professional monitoring starts around $40/month. Either way, you come home to the house you left.

Summer is in full swing at Bear Lake — the beaches are packed, the boats are out, and Raspberry Days is right around the corner (Aug 6–8 in Garden City 🍇). It's the best few weeks of the year up here.

It's also the busiest. More visitors, more comings and goings, and a lot of cabins and homes sitting empty while everyone's out at the lake or in town for the festival.

A neighborly reminder from your local security folks: before the crowds roll in, take five minutes to check your locks, make sure your cameras cover the driveway and main door, and — if your place sits empty between visits — think about who's getting the alert if something happens.

We're a local Utah company, and we're here to help you enjoy the season without worrying about home. Free walkthroughs anytime.

Does a security system actually lower insurance on your Bear Lake cabin? Short answer: yes — most insurers offer 5-20% off for monitored systems, and Garden City's short-term rental license process already asks owners for proof of insurance. We broke down what it costs and what insurers actually require. Read more: https://ycksecurity.com/blog/cabin-insurance-discount-bear-lake-2026/
