The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is a 200,000-square-foot expansion of the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California. Breaking ground in June of 2022, this expansion nearly doubles the Science Center’s educational space to house air and space exhibits, which include the Space Shuttle Endeavor in its vertical launch position – as if its ready to return for another mission to space. 🚀

Acting as the design-assist mechanical contractor for the project, one of the most complex aspects of the work involved was the fabrication and installation of a 120,000-pound double-wall roof duct system. With just one month allocated for fabrication and a week for crane placement, our team successfully ramped up production by 100% to meet the tight deadline.

"This project was truly remarkable," Jesse Jong, Senior Project Manager, said. "It's more than a feat of engineering and construction — it's about honoring the past with a unique space that will leave a lasting impression for generations to come."

Our work on a chemical plant located on a 130-acre site near the Houston Ship Channel demonstrates our service capabilities and strong market presence.

This chemical plant is one of the original sixteen synthetic rubber plants built during World War II to support the production of “government-rubber styrene.” Today the facility manufacturers Emulsion Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (ESBR) and a portfolio of other critical equipment.

We were established as a trusted service partner from the very beginning, and as a result, the client transitioned from a full-service contract model, which aligned better with the plant’s operational needs. As a result, we delivered high-value service solutions by responding to 42 service calls in the first month of the contract and more than 100 service calls within the first six months.

In June of 1949, six employees purchased the Payne Furnace Long Beach, California branch for $24,000 and named the new company Southland Heating.

From these humble beginnings to now, we've transformed into a national MEP leader, providing full lifecycle building solutions. Part of our transformation is due to our success of continuing to optimize the design, construction, operation, and efficiency of buildings to better serve our clients.

We’re excited to continue to build on this momentum to continue innovating and creating better built environments where communities and businesses can thrive.

The variety of roles and locations he’s worked in has undoubtedly expanded his perspective and understanding of the business at all levels.

Ted’s path was shaped by being Southland’s very first intern — a title which he reminisces upon fondly to this day, as a major supporter of the Early Career experiences and opportunities here at Southland.

"The fact that I've spent my whole career here and worked my way up from intern to where I am now is a unique situation. You don't see too many people stay with the same company that long,” Ted says. “I experienced firsthand how our investment in people, specifically our interns, fosters growth and excellence."

Our work on data centers highlights our speed-to-market capabilities and our ability to integrate the latest technologies and architecture into these facilities to maximize sustainability, scalability, and reliability.

For our work on the Vantage AZ1 data center, we are providing design-build mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection services for this campus that spans over one million square feet. To support the facility's cooling demands, we installed over 20 miles of piping, enabling a total cooling capacity of over 96,000 tons.

As of early 2025, our jobsite prioritization has led to a remarkable safety milestone of logging 2 million hours without a recordable incident, despite 213 days over 100°F. Read more here: https://ow.ly/9SQp50ZazUZ

Our work in the healthcare market demonstrates our ability to create state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to support the well-being of patients and providers.

For the newly renovated SAC Health – Brier Campus, we were responsible for the design, coordination, fabrication, and installation of the HVAC wet and dry systems, as well as the plumbing systems, for this new medical facility. Since each floor had little loading space and onsite storage was tight, prefabrication was planned down to the inch, with duct and pipe spools arriving just in time for installation.

First joining Southland as an intern, Jim has more than 23 years of experience and has served as Southland’s Chief Operating Officer since 2024. Jim will succeed Ted Lynch, Chief Executive Officer, on October 1, 2026.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Jim over many years and have seen how he leads, thinks, and brings people together,” said CEO Ted Lynch. “I’m confident in where Jim is going to take Southland in the future.”
