🥶Freezing Weather Plumbing Tips🥶
1. Let faucets drip
When temperatures drop below freezing, allow a slow drip from faucets—especially those on exterior walls. Moving water is less likely to freeze.
2. Open cabinet doors
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to let warm air circulate around pipes under sinks.
3. Insulate exposed pipes
Wrap pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls with foam pipe insulation or heat tape.
4. Disconnect outdoor hoses
Remove hoses and shut off exterior water valves if possible. Drain spigots completely to prevent bursting.
5. Keep the heat on
Never turn your heat off completely—even if you’re away. Set it no lower than 55°F.
6. Seal drafts
Check for cold air around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the house. Seal gaps with caulk or insulation.
7. Know where your main shutoff is
If a pipe bursts, shutting off the main water supply immediately can prevent major damage.
8. If pipes freeze — don’t use open flames
Never use a torch or open flame. Use a hair dryer, space heater (with caution), or warm towels instead.
9. Check crawl spaces and garages
These areas freeze first. Make sure vents are closed and pipes are protected.
10. Call me early-201-396-9529
If water pressure drops or you suspect frozen pipes, call before it turns into a burst pipe emergency.
Stay warm friends! 🥶
